Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders compared to Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks notably opted to not pick a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft. Instead, they decided to stick with starter Geno Smith and opt to trade for former Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell. The Seahawks quarterback room is set for 2024, but what about in 2025?

If Seattle decides to move on from Smith (far from a given reality at this point) next season and actually draft a quarterback, there is someone with a skillet comprable to Smith himself. NFL Network analysit Daniel Jeremiah recently used Smith as a comp for one of the top quarterback prospects in college football this year: Colorado’s own Shedeur Sanders.

Jeremiah writes “Like Smith during his time with the Mountaineers, Sanders plays in a wide-open college offense that showcases his polish as a passer. Both Smith and Sanders have beautiful throwing motions and deliver a firm/catchable ball. While each is capable of taking the free yards presented in the run game, neither is dynamic as a ball-carrier.”

Last season, Sanders had a quality individual season statistically. He completed 69% of his passes for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns against only three interceptions. However, as a team, the Colorado Buffaloes had one of the bigger collapses in recent memory.

Colorado did improve upon their disastrous 1-11 season in 2022, but we were all quickly reminded why they lost 11 games that season. The Buffs started 3-0 but finished 1-8, including losing their final six-consecutive games.

Headed into 2024, Colorado will look to avenge last season’s meltdown as they resume Big XII play for the first time since 2010.

Given his athletic ability, as well as his NFL royalty lineage, there is no doubt Sanders will be one of the most watched players in the country this season. Not to mention constant draft evaluation. Undoubtedly, general manager John Schneider and his scouting department will be sure to keep an eye on the young Buffalo this year.
