Oklahomans in bowls: State connections to each college football bowl game for 2023 season

From the Myrtle Beach Bowl, which kicks off bowl season on Saturday, to the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 8, every bowl will have some type of connection with Oklahoma.

Here’s a breakdown of which players and coaches involved in the games from the state:

Dec. 16 college football bowl games

Myrtle Beach Bowl: Georgia Southern vs. Ohio

KICKOFF: 10 a.m., ESPN

Georgia Southern: Sixth-year quarterback Davis Brin is a Tulsa transfer. Brin has thrown for 3,431 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for another score in 12 games this season.

Ohio: Head coach Tim Albin is a Woodward native, graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State and Northeastern State and served as the head coach at NWOSU, leading the Rangers to the 1999 national title. Prior to being promoted to head coach, he was the offensive coordinator and head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach there.

Cricket Celebration Bowl: Howard vs. Florida A&M

KICKOFF: 11 a.m., ABC

Florida A&M: Senior linebacker Isaiah Major is a Millwood product. Major leads the Rattlers is tackles with 100 and has 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery, three pass breakups and five quarterback hurries in 12 starts. Graduate offensive lineman Morgan Moore is a Midwest City alum. Moore appeared in eight games, starting seven.

New Orleans Bowl: Jacksonville State vs. Louisiana

KICKOFF: 1:15 p.m., ESPN

Louisiana: Junior safety Micaiah Bivines is from Norman. Special teams coordinator Luke Paschall was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State in 2008-09 and a quality control assistant there in 2010.

Cure Bowl: Appalachian State vs. Miami (Ohio)

KICKOFF: 2:30 p.m., ABC

Appalachian State: Redshirt sophomore long snapper Jake Mann is an OU transfer.

Miami (Ohio): Offensive line/associate head coach/run game coordinator James Patton was OU’s offensive line coach from 2006-12.

New Mexico Bowl: New Mexico State vs. Fresno State

KICKOFF: 4:45 p.m., ESPN

New Mexico State: Junior running back Jamoni Jones is a Tulsa Memorial product and NEO transfer. Jones rushed for 328 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. He also had seven catches for 59 yards. Freshman quarterback Blaze Berlowitz is a Cushing alum. He appeared in one game and threw for 134 yards and a touchdown and had 36 yards rushing. Sophomore quarterback Gavin Frakes is a Norman North product. Freshman wide receiver Jayden Bell is from Muskogee. Bell appeared in one game and had one kickoff return. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Noah Arinze is an OU transfer. Arinze had nine tackles, 1.5 for loss, in 12 games. Freshman offensive lineman Kaden Stanton is from Beggs and appeared in two games. Offensive line coach Andrew Mitchell is an Oklahoma State alum. Defensive line coach Chuka Ndulue is a former OU standout who served as a volunteer assistant with the Sooners from 2017-18.

LA Bowl: Boise State vs. UCLA

KICKOFF: 6:30 p.m., ABC

UCLA: Assistant head coach/passing game coordinator/safeties coach Brian Norwood coached safeties at Tulsa from 2015-17.

Texas Tech: Super senior safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson is a Carl Albert alum. Taylor-Demerson has 66 tackles, a sack, four interceptions, six pass breakups and two quarterback hurries in 12 starts. Sophomore outside linebacker Isaac Smith is from Wagoner. Redshirt senior defensive back Cameron Watts is a Tulsa Union product. Watts has seven tackles in 12 games. Redshirt freshman defensive back Maurion Horn is from Broken Arrow. Horn has four tackles in nine games. Outside linebackers coach CJ Ah You played at OU in 2005-06 and was a defensive quality control assistant for the Sooners in 2014-15.

California: Redshirt junior punter Lachlan Wilson is a Tulsa transfer. Wilson is averaging 45.57 yards on 47 punts. Offensive coordinator Mike Bloesch was a quality control coach at Tulsa in 2015 and coached offensive line for the Golden Hurricane from 2016-19.

Western Kentucky vs. Old Dominion

Western Kentucky: Redshirt junior offensive lineman Colten Cable is a Tulsa Union alum. Cable has appeared in eight games, starting three at right guard.

Old Dominion: Defensive line coach Victor Irokansi is an Oklahoma State alum who also spent line as a student coach for the Cowboys and two seasons as an analyst there. Safeties coach Remington Rebstock spent three seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at Oklahoma State.

Frisco Bowl

UTSA vs. Marshall

UTSA: Defensive coordinator/safeties coach Jess Loepp is a Turpin native who played at UCO. He was an assistant coach at Oklahoma Bible Academy in 2002 before beginning his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Tulsa from 2003-05. He coached safeties at Tulsa in 2007, spent the 2009 season as the Golden Hurricane’s director of high school relations and then coached safeties again there from 2010-2014. Defensive pass game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Nick Graham is from Oklahoma City and is a former Millwood standout. After playing at Tulsa, he served as a student assistant with the Golden Hurricane in 2013 before two seasons as a defensive analyst there. From 2016-18, he coached defensive backs at UCO.

Marshall: Defensive coordinator Jason Semore was a defensive analyst at Oklahoma State in 2012-13 after coaching outside linebackers at Tulsa in 2010-11.

South Florida: Sophomore cornerback Kendall Dennis is an OU transfer. Dennis has one tackle in five games. Senior cornerback JaBari Roberson transferred from NEO. Junior wide receiver Damon Smith is an OU transfer. Smith has appeared in two games. Head coach Alex Golesh was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State in 2008. Tight ends coach Clay Patterson is a Morris product and Southeastern Oklahoma State alum. He coached wide receivers at SEOSU from 2003-05 and was NEO’s head coach in 2016-17. Wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington was OU’s interim wide receivers coach last season.

Syracuse: Offensive line coach Steve Farmer coached Tulsa’s offensive line in 2022.

UCF: Freshman defensive tackle Derrick LeBlanc was at OU in the spring. LeBlanc had one tackle in one game. Head coach Gus Malzahn was a co-offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Tulsa in 2007-08. Co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach David Gibbs was a graduate assistant at OU in 1991-92. Co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Herb Hand was the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Tulsa in 2007-09.

Georgia Tech: Safeties coach Andy Thacker was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State from 2010-12.

Kiser has 68 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a pair of pass break-ups in 12 games, 11 starts. Senior tight end Lincoln Sefcik is from Enid and played at NEO. Sefcik has 17 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown in nine games, six starts. Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Nathan Rawlins-Kibonge is an OU transfer. Rawlins-Kibonge has one quarterback hurry in three games. Offensive line coach Gordon Steele was born in Stillwater.

Eastern Michigan: Sophomore defensive lineman Maliek Bogard is from Beggs. Junior defensive lineman Melvin Swindle II is a Heritage Hall product. Swindle has 22 tackles and three quarterback hurries in 10 games. Tight ends coach Brandon Blaney was a graduate assistant at OU in 1999-2000.

Northwestern: Defensive line coach Christian Smith is an Oklahoma City native and former Carl Albert standout.

Utah: Senior cornerback JaTravis Broughton is a Tulsa Union product. Broughton has 36 tackles and two pass break-ups in 11 games, 10 starts. Redshirt freshman cornerback Jocelyn Malaska is a Bethany alum. Malaska played in five games.

San Jose State: Cornerbacks coach Chip Viney was a graduate assistant at OU from 2013-15 and analyst there in 2016 and 2018-21.

Coastal Carolina: Redshirt senior cornerback Keonta Lusk is an East Central transfer. Lusk has 36 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble in 12 games — 11 starts. Offensive line coach Derek Warehime is from Choctaw at a Tulsa alum. Warehime began his coaching career as a student assistant for the Golden Hurricane in 2005.

Minnesota: Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Cade McConnell is from Choctaw. Fifth-year senior defensive tackle Kyler Baugh is from Talihina. Baugh has 40 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 12 starts. Run game coordinator/offensive line coach Brian Callahan was a graduate assistant at OU in 1995.

Redshirt senior running back Jahmyl Jeter, redshirt sophomore kicker Mason Shipley and redshirt junior wide receiver Langston Anderson are Oklahoma State transfers. Jeter has 140 yards and six touchdowns rushing and one nine-yard catch in 12 games. Anderson has a 21-yard catch in one game. UNLV: Freshman wide receiver DeAngelo Irvin Jr. is a Midwest City alum. He has two catches for 42 yards in six games. Irvin also has a 19-yard carry, two punt returns for 52 yards and four kick returns for 45 yards. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Will Thomas is a Tulsa Union grad. Thomas appeared in 12 games. Junior defensive tackle Cooper Webb is a Davis product who also played at NEO. Webb has 28 tackles and a quarterback hurry in 13 games, starting the last three games. Cornerbacks coach Jason Jones was Oklahoma State’s cornerbacks coach from 2008-12 and spent the 2005 and 2007 seasons as an assistant at Tulsa.

Louisville vs. USC

Louisville: Wide receivers coach Garrick McGee is a Tulsa Booker T. Washington and OU alum, who began his college career at NEO and was an assistant coach at Langston in 1996-98.

USC: Junior quarterback Caleb Williams and junior wide receiver Mario Williams are OU transfers. Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman winner, threw for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns with just five interceptions this season and ran for 121 yards and 11 touchdowns. Mario Williams had 29 catches for 305 yards and two touchdowns. Senior inside linebacker Mason Cobb is an Oklahoma State transfer. Cobb leads the Trojans in tackles with 77 in 10 games. Head coach Lincoln Riley spent five seasons as OU’s head coach after two seasons as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Tight ends coach Zach Hanson spent two seasons as Tulsa’s offensive line coach. In 2019, he was a senior offensive analyst at OU. Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Josh Henson is from Tuttle and played at Oklahoma State from 1993-97. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Kingfisher High in 1998, was a graduate assistant for OSU in 1999, then returned to Stillwater from 2016-18 as an offensive analyst the first year and offensive line coach in the next two seasons. Outside linebackers/nickelback coach/assistant head coach for defense Roy Manning spent the last three seasons as OU’s cornerbacks coach. Inside linebackers/associate head coach for defense Brian Odom is an Ada alum who spent two seasons at OU in 2000-01 before transferring and finishing his career at Southeastern Oklahoma State. He spent three seasons, 2019-21, as OU’s inside linebackers coach. Assistant head coach/outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons spent the previous seven seasons coaching outside receivers with the Sooners.

SMU: Senior wide receiver Will Kuehne is from Owasso. Junior offensive lineman Ben Sparks is from Norman. Sparks has appeared in 12 games, starting one game at left guard and six games at right guard. Redshirt senior defensive tackle Kori Roberson is an OU transfer. Roberson has 29 tackles, three sacks and an interception in 13 games. Defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux is an OU alum who spent the last six seasons as an assistant for the Sooners. He spent 2012-14 as an assistant at Tulsa.

Boston College: Wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Darrell Wyatt held the same title at Oklahoma State in 2001 and coached wide receivers at OU from 2002-05, also serving as passing game coordinator in 2005. He returned to Oklahoma State as an offensive analyst in 2015.

Miami: Redshirt cornerback Jaden Davis is an OU transfer. Davis has 36 tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles. He started 11 of 12 games.

North Carolina State: Safeties coach Joe DeForest coached special teams and secondary at Oklahoma State from 2001-04 and safeties and special teams there from 2005-11.

Kansas State: Sophomore linebacker Jake Clifton is from Owasso. Clifton has 24 tackles and three quarterback hurries in eight games, three starts. Redshirt sophomore long snapper Mason Olguin is an Edmond Santa Fe grad. Redshirt freshman defensive end Donovan Rieman is an Enid product. Freshman linebacker Gabe Roland is from Ponca City. Freshman cornerback Kanijal Thomas is a Del City alum. Thomas has two tackles in six games. Defensive ends coach Buddy Wyatt coached the defensive line at Oklahoma State in 1996. Assistant head coach/passing game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Van Malone coached the secondary at Tulsa in 2010-11, safeties at Oklahoma State in 2012 and cornerbacks there in 2013-14. Clemson: Senior safety Tyler Venables is the son of OU head coach Brent Venables. Venables appeared in two games.

Kentucky: Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Jay Boulware held the same job at OU from 2013-19. Inside linebackers coach Mike Stoops had two stints as OU’s defensive coordinator — from 1999-2003 where he shared the duties with Brent Venables — and them from 2012-18.

Sun Bowl

Oregon State vs. Notre Dame

Oregon State: Recruiting coordinator Kyrei Fisher-Morris is a Tulsa Union product.

Notre Dame: Senior safety Thomas Harper is an Oklahoma State transfer. Harper has 39 tackles and two sacks with a forced fumble in 11 games — 10 starts. Running backs coach/run game coordinator Deland McCullough is the father of OU’s Dasan and Daeh McCullough.

Liberty Bowl

Iowa State vs. Memphis

Iowa State: Freshman defensive back Ta’Shawn James is a Carl Albert product. James has five tackles in four games. Sophomore kicker/punter Jace Gilbert is from Marlow. Gilbert has three kickoffs, two for touchbacks.

Memphis: Redshirt senior defensive lineman Josh Ellison and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Cullen Montgomery are OU transfers. Ellison has 29 tackles, four for loss, in 12 games and is listed as the starter at defensive tackle. Montgomery has appeared in two games.

Missouri: Senior defensive lineman Jayden Jernigan is an Oklahoma State transfer. Jernigan has 18 tackles and three quarterback hurries in 12 games, eight starts. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Theo Wease is an OU transfer. Wease has 45 catches for 639 yards and six touchdowns, starting every game. Redshirt senior wide receiver Demariyon Houston is a Millwood product. Junior offensive lineman EJ Ndoma-Ogar is an OU transfer. Ndoma-Ogar played in four games. Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz was born in Norman. Running backs coach Curtis Luper coached running backs at OSU from 2005-08 and played for the Cowboys from 1984-87.

Ohio State: Graduate safety Josh Proctor is an Owasso product. Proctor had 41 tackles, an interception and eight pass break-ups in 10 games, all starts. Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Jim Knowles held the same position at Oklahoma State from 2018-21.

Ole Miss: Senior quarterback Spencer Sanders is an Oklahoma State transfer. Sanders has thrown for 278 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 45 yards in nine games.

Auburn vs. Maryland

Auburn: Junior offensive lineman Jaden Muskrat is from Berryhill and transferred from Tulsa. Muskrat appeared in 11 games, with one start at left tackle. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Philip Montgomery was Tulsa’s head coach from 2015-22.

Maryland: Associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin was OU’s tights ends/special teams coach from 2003-05 and co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach in 2006-07. Wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Gunter Brewer coached at Oklahoma State from 2005-10, coaching wide receivers and quarterbacks and serving as co-offensive coordinator from 2008-10. Safeties coach Zac Spavital is from Tulsa, played at NEO from 2000-01 was served as a graduate assistant at OU from 2005-07.

Orange Bowl

Georgia vs. Florida State

Florida State: Head coach Mike Norvell was a graduate assistant at Tulsa in 2007-08. His first full-time coaching job was there as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2009. In 2010, he added recruiting director duties.

Toledo: Sophomore tight end Lenny Kuhl is a Casady alum.

LSU: Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Preston Hickey is an Oklahoma State transfer. Hickey has appeared in two games. Offensive line coach Brad Davis is an OU alum. Safeties coach Kerry Cooks coached defensive backs at OU from 2015-18. Special teams coordinator/outside linebackers coach Bob Diaco coached outside linebackers at OU in 2018 after moving from a defensive analyst role following the firing of Mike Stoops.

Wisconsin: Redshirt senior Tanner Mordecai was at OU from 2018-20. Mordecai threw for 1,687 yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions in nine starts. He also rushed for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Evers is an OU transfer. Junior wide receiver Bryson Green is an Oklahoma State transfer. Green has 25 catches for 375 yards and a touchdown in 10 games.

Iowa vs. Tennessee

Tennessee: Head coach Josh Heupel quarterbacks OU in 1999-2000, winning the national title during his final season. Heupel was a graduate assistant for the Sooners in 2003-04, coached quarterbacks there from 2006-10 and was elevated to co-offensive coordinator from 2011-14. Outside linebackers/special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler was a defensive graduate assistant at OU from 2003-04. Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State in 2008-09. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle is an OU alum. From 2009-11, he was a Sooners’ offensive quality control assistant before serving as an offensive graduate assistant in 2012-14. Secondary coach Willie Martinez served in the same position at OU from 2010-11.

Liberty: Senior wide receiver Elijah Smoot is from Beggs. He has 11 catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games. Redshirt senior offensive lineman X’Zauvea Gadlin is a Tulsa transfer.

Michigan: Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore played for OU in 2006-07. Moore served four games as interim head coach this season.

Alabama: Freshman wide receiver Cole Adams is an Owasso alum. Adams had two catches for 11 yards in two games. Senior wide receiver Zarian Courtney is an Oklahoma Baptist transfer who appeared in one game. Running backs coach Robert Gillespie served in the same position at Oklahoma State in 2009-10. Assistant head coach of offense/wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins coached Tulsa's running backs in 2011.

Texas: Running backs coach Tashard Choice began his college career at OU before transferring to Georgia Tech.

Washington: Junior cornerback Jabbar Muhammad is an Oklahoma State transfer. Muhammad has 42 tackles, three interceptions, a fumble recovery and a team-high 12 pass breakups in 13 games.
