Cody Schrader waived by 49ers; all Missouri football 2024 draft picks make initial NFL rosters

Former Missouri football running back Cody Schrader was among the players waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, when NFL teams cut rosters from 90 players down to 53 ahead of the new season.

The storied running back still is a likely candidate to end up on a practice squad, however. Even if Schrader goes unclaimed through the waiver-wire process that will run through 11 a.m. Wednesday, he becomes a free agent and available to sign with any team.

Schrader also, however, could wait for the spring. His hometown St. Louis Battlehawks used a second-round pick on him in the UFL Draft in July, meaning Schrader could opt to wait for that opportunity if he does not make a September NFL roster.

Meanwhile, all five Mizzou players selected in the 2024 NFL Draft have found their way onto initial 53-man rosters.

Here is a full list of former Tigers who are on initial league rosters, and a look at others who were waived or released during Tuesday’s cuts:

The Tigers’ first first-round draft pick in seven years, Darius Robinson, is on the Arizona Cardinals’ 53-man roster heading into the 2024 season. He was, however, placed on the injured reserve list and will miss at least the first four weeks of the season due to a calf injury he suffered in training camp.

Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is set to suit up at corner for the Detroit Lions, who used a second-round pick to select him this year. Also on an initial NFL 53-man roster is the other half of Mizzou’s star cornerback tandem from last season, Kris Abrams-Draine, who the Denver Broncos selected with a fifth-round pick.

The Green Bay Packers placed third-round pick Ty’Ron Hopper on their 53-man roster.

All-American left tackle Javon Foster made the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster, where he’ll team up with former Mizzou offensive tackle-turned-center Mitch Morse. Foster’s fellow fifth-round selection in the 2024 draft, safety JC Carlies, also is heading into the season on a roster, now as a linebacker, with the Indianapolis Colts.

Heading further back into Missouri draft classes, Nick Bolton, a second-round selection in 2021, unsurprisingly is on the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster.

Drew Lock is the last remaining former Mizzou quarterback currently in the league, as he made the New York Giants’ list despite picking up an injury in training camp.

Isaiah McGuire, a third-round pick in 2023, is on the Cleveland Browns’ initial roster. Akayleb Evans, who played one season for MU in 2021, is on the Minnesota Vikings’ squad for the third straight season.

Former Mizzou offensive tackle Larry Borom was placed on the short term injured reserve by the Chicago Bears and is designated to return. Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam was placed on injured reserve by the Philadelphia Eagles and also is designated to return.

Mekhi Wingo, who committed to Mizzou out of high school and spent one season in Columbia before transferring to LSU, made the Lions’ initial roster.

Schrader was one of three recent Missouri running backs waived Tuesday. Tyler Badie was waived by the Denver Broncos, and former Rock Bridge standout and Missouri tailback Nathaniel Peat was waived by the Dallas Cowboys.

MU left guard Xavier Delgado did not make the final cut for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being taken as an undrafted free agent. Earlier in training camp, placekicker Harrison Mevis was waived by the Carolina Panthers and is yet to be re-signed.

One-year Mizzou defensive end DJ Coleman was let go by the Jaguars; former MU safety Joshua Bledsoe was waived by the New England Patriots; and Trajan Jeffcoat, who spent five seasons at Mizzou before transferring to Arkansas, was waived last week by the New Orleans Saints. Tight end Messiah Swinson, who spent three seasons with MU before transferring to Arizona State, was released by the Packers.

Former Mizzou defensive end Shane Ray had his contract terminated as a vested veteran by the Tennessee Titans, which means he will forgo the waiver wire.
