How coaching Peyton Manning will help Tennessee Titans' Brian Callahan guide Will Levis
Will Levis is the latest in a long and decorated list of quarterbacks new Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan will have overseen, a list that includes names such as Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow.
Callahan said Thursday during his introductory news conference at Saint Thomas Sports Park that he had run into Levis earlier in the day and that he looked forward to working with him.
Callahan said he plans to apply the knowledge he accumulated from coaching such players to help with Levis' development next season.
"I've been incredibly fortunate to be around great players," he said. "Those guys offer something different and unique. We talk about Peyton Manning and his incredible ability to prepare, the attention to detail he brought every single day, the intensity.
"He showed me what it was like to be a great quarterback."
Callahan was an offensive assistant coach with the Denver Broncos while Manning was there for four seasons, which included a Super Bowl title, two Pro Bowls and an MVP. In 2013, Manning led the NFL in attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns.
The former Tennessee Vols quarterback showered his former coach with nothing but praise, calling him "a great hire."
"I'm very happy for Brian," Manning told TennesseeTitans.com on Wednesday. "Brian was extremely helpful to me during my four years playing for the Broncos. . . . Extremely hard working, extremely intelligent and just overall a great person. Not only did I benefit from his coaching and all the help that he gave me as a quarterback for the Broncos, but also just thoroughly enjoyed being around him and coming to work every day.
"I think it's a great hire for the Tennessee Titans. I know he'll give the Titans everything he has."
Callahan doesn't expect his quarterbacks to be the next Manning or Stafford, whom he coached for two seasons while with the Lions. He called Stafford "incredibly tough," adding that he had "never seen a locker room rally around a player" like Detroit's did.
Callahan coached Burrow for four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, including 2021, when Burrow led the NFL in completion percentage and yards per pass.
"It really helped me learn how to be flexible with the approach for those players and put them in a position to do well," Callahan said. "How they go about their daily routine . . . those conversations are able to help foster, hopefully, a lot of success."
