Cleveland Browns training camp day 2: Nick Chubb shows off progress in post-practice run

Browns general manager Andrew Berry, left, and coach Kevin Stefanski watch practice during minicamp June 13 in Berea.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Browns get back on the field for their second training camp practice on Friday morning.

The team held a abbreviated practice on Thursday afternoon, their first day at The Greenbrier. The ramp-up continues on Friday with the second of three workouts before the first off day of camp on Sunday.

The Browns are scheduled to be on the field at 11 a.m. Head coach Kevin Stefanski is slated to speak prior to practice at 10:30 a.m., while quarterback Deshaun Watson and defensive end Myles Garrett are scheduled to talk for the first time in camp after practice.

Follow along here for updates from day two of training camp.

Nick Chubb shows off running skills during post-practice rehab session

The Browns finished up their on-field practice a little after noon. More than an hour later, though, running backs Nick Chubb and Nyheim Hines were still on the field doing an extensive running session.

Chubb sustained a left knee injury that required two separate surgeries, the last of those on Nov. 14. However, 10 months and eight days after the injury, he was doing multiple 50-yard sprints, followed by a series of half-speed zig-zag cuts.

"I'd say he's progressing exactly where he should be," head coach Kevin Stefanski said prior to practice. "You know Nick. I know Nick. I mean he's pushing it. He's doing everything that they're asking him to do and as much as he can do. … It's good to have him out here, period. We always love when Nick's out there at practice. He's somebody that even when he's not in the given play, he can make a big impact on it."

Hines, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last July in a jet ski accident while he was still with the Buffalo Bills, was also doing the same sprints as Chubb. The running back/return man remains on the physically unable to practice list despite having said in the spring his goal was to be back in time for the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Deshaun Watson gets initial 11-on-11 reps of camp

Quarterback Deshaun Watson took another step forward in his recovery from shoulder surgery on Friday. This time, it was throwing in 11-on-11 drills for the first time since his shoulder injury last Nov. 12 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Watson was unofficially 6 of 7 in the drill. Nothing was deep, but the accuracy was present.

it was also Watson’s first time throwing on consecutive days in practice. He had been every other day in minicamp last month.

Nick Chubb, Jerry Jeudy among Cleveland Browns players working out with trainer during practice

The following Browns players were working to the side with a trainer during the early portion of Friday's practice:

  • Running back Nick Chubb

  • Running back Nyheim Hines

  • Safety D'Anthony Bell

  • Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy

  • Cornerback Cameron Mitchell

  • Tight end David Njoku

  • Defensive end Myles Garrett

Kevin Stefanski: 'We'll adjust' to a potential 18-game schedule

The Washington Post reported earlier this week that "high-level" talks between the NFL and NFL Players Association had begun regarding the addition of an 18th game to the schedule. There's no definitive timetable, but it could happen in the next few years.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked of his opinion of the 18th game and what that would mean.

"We'll adjust," Stefanski said. "If and when that happens, we'll adjust. We think long and hard about that when you put together a plan, but we'll adjust whatever the league says."

Jerome Ford remains absent for 'personal reasons,' but has 'great news'

Running back Jerome Ford was once again absent from practice for what remains "personal reasons." Head coach Kevin Stefanski reiterated he would be back soon enough, with something to tell as well.

"He won't be here today, but he'll be here shortly. He's got some great news to share with you."

Stefanski wouldn't elaborate on the "great news" Ford would share. The fourth-year pro is projected to be the starter as long as running back Nick Chubb is recovering from his knee injury.

Myles Garrett being ramped up for Cleveland Browns training camp

The NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, continues to go through a ramp-up process for training camp. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said it's the lingering effects from the left hamstring injury sustained on the final day of minicamp in June.

"Yeah, just going to ramp him up," Stefanski said prior to Friday's practice. "We'll continue to work off to the side with him for now. He'll be out there shortly."

Garrett worked to the side during the Browns' opening training camp practice at The Greenbrier on Thursday afternoon. However, he did jump in during a walk-through-type install period for the defense late in the 40-minute practice.

Stefanski also said tight end David Njoku was on a similar plan. He didn't practice on Thursday.
