Cleveland Browns place QB Deshaun Watson on injured reserve, announce Bailey Zappe signing

The Browns officially placed quarterback Deshaun Watson on injured reserve on Tuesday. They also officially announced the previously-reported signing of quarterback Bailey Zappe to take his place on the active roster.

Those moves were among a handful the Browns made on Tuesday. They also waived linebacker Tony Fields II from injured reserve, where he had been since Sept. 11 due to an ankle injury suffered in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Browns also made a pair of practice-squad moves. They re-signed running back Gary Brightwell to the practice squad and released offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez from the practice squad.

Watson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon with 1:22 remaining in the second quarter of last Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He had completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards with five touchdowns, three interceptions, a 79.0 passer rating while being sacked 33 times.

Zappe was on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad this season after having played in 14 games with eight starts for the New England Patriots the past two seasons. He has completed 192 of 304 passes for 2,053 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career, including a career-high 309 yards in a 2022 win at Cleveland.

Fields was originally a fifth-round pick of the Browns in 2021 out of West Virginia University. He appeared in 45 games with 10 starts for Cleveland, with a interception return for a touchdown, a fumble return for a touchdown among his two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble to go with 88 tackles.
