BEREA — Training camp is fast approaching for the Browns.

Rookies are scheduled to report on Monday, with the veterans coming in the next day. The Browns will then head to the Greenbrier in West Virginia on July 25 for the first of seven practices over nine days there before returning to Berea for the remainder of camp.

On the Cleveland Browns roster: Safeties

Grant Delpit, Juan Thornhill, Rodney McLeod, D'Anthony Bell, Ronnie Hickman, Chris Edmonds, Brady Breeze

Projected starters: Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill

Delpit and Thornhill each had injuries that took the starch out of their 2023 season. The difference was the quality of seasons they were having before those injuries. Delpit was legitimately playing at a Pro Bowl level before a Week 14 groin injury that turned into a season-ender. The fifth-year former second-round pick finally unlocked the potential that had made him so attractive to the Browns in the 2020 draft. In defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's scheme, Delpit's all-around skill was put on display last year, another reason why year two in that scheme could bring big things for the safety. Thornhill, meanwhile, battled injuries to his calf that prevented him from really getting unlocked in his first season in Cleveland. He was signed as a free agent in March 2023 after winning two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs. Beyond the injuries, though, Thornhill struggled to provide consistent playmaking in his first year. That's something the Browns are banking on improving just with better health for him.

One to watch: Rodney McLeod

McLeod was a May addition last year who turned into a vital leader in the Browns locker room. A Week 10 torn biceps ended McLeod's on-the-field season, but didn't end his season as a dominant voice among defensive players off the field. This offseason, though, he elected to re-sign with the Browns for his final season, having also announced he'll retire after this year. He was productive while on the field last year, and he was also versatile. The Browns hope to get both of those for McLeod's one last ride.

Potential training camp battle: D'Anthony Bell and Ronnie Hickman

The Browns clearly love both of these players. Both weren't just big on special teams, but also stepped up in a major way in December after injuries decimated the safety position. It would stand to reason both should be fairly comfortably in position to make the roster again. However, the question may be in the overall puzzle that is roster construction and depending on if there is another player needed at a different position. Could that leave the Browns taking just four safeties? Not likely, but just asking.

Impact of injuries entering training camp

Even players like Delpit, who didn't do all of the on-field drills during the offseason program, are expected to be available for the start of training camp.
