Clemson remains atop Week 2 AP Top 25 that now features only teams playing in 2020
Clemson stayed atop the revised AP Top 25 after the second week of the pandemic-modified 2020 college football season.
The preseason AP poll featured teams from every FBS conference. But with four FBS conferences including the Big Ten and Pac-12 not playing — for now — in the fall of 2020, the Associated Press made the decision to only include teams playing their seasons in the fall for the rest of the season.
Sunday’s poll was the first of those polls. Alabama moved up to No. 2 and is followed by Oklahoma, Georgia and Florida in the top five. The Gators passed LSU from the preseason poll, likely because LSU stars Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Shelvin opted out.
You can view the preseason AP poll here to see which teams were originally included. Ohio State opened the season as the No. 2 team in the country. The Buckeyes and their Big Ten cohorts then fell out of the poll this week with no season scheduled at the moment.
Louisiana moved into the poll at No. 19 after beating Iowa State on the road on Saturday. The Ragin’ Cajuns were impressive in a 31-14 win at the Cyclones, who were No. 23 in the preseason poll.
Just 13 of the 25 teams in the poll have played a game in the 2020 season. And only Army, at No. 24, has played two games in 2020. The Black Knights beat Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday after beating Middle Tennessee State in Week 1.
Clemson, meanwhile, opened its season on Saturday at Wake Forest and easily dispatched the Demon Deacons 37-13.
