New Clemson baseball coach Erik Bakich gets 6-year deal, would earn $1.1M in final season
Erik Bakich is Clemson's new baseball coach.
Clemson's Board of Trustees compensation committee approved the hire and salary Thursday morning. Bakich will be officially introduced in a news conference set for 2 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Bakich received a six-year contract worth $850,000 in the first year and up to $1.1 million by the final year. Clemson also provided a $400,000 as a signing incentive and to buy out the remainder of his contract at Michigan.
Bakich, 44, has been coach at Michigan for the past 10 years. He replaces Monte Lee, who was fired after seven seasons. The Tigers were 35-24 and failed to make the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years for the first time since 1984 and 1985. Overall, Lee was 276-145 (.656).
Bakich was a volunteer assistant for Jack Leggett at Clemson in 2002 and went with then-assistant Tim Corbin the next season to Vanderbilt. Bakich was head coach at Maryland from 2010-12.
The Tigers have not been to the College World Series since 2010 under Leggett, who was fired in 2015 and replaced with Lee. Bakich is Clemson's fourth baseball coach since 1957. Bill Wilhelm was there from 1958-93 and won 1,707 games.
