Class A girls basketball: Seiling tops Caddo, wins back-to-back state championships

Kenly Gore dribbled the ball up the court, analyzing Caddo’s set defense and looking for an opening.

With season-leading scorer Braci Nyberg on the bench with foul trouble in the second quarter, someone else was going to have to step up. Nyberg had already made three 3-pointers in the first half.

So, Gore figured it'd be her to accept the challenge.

“I’m more of a distributor,” Gore said. “But when she got out in foul trouble, I knew I had to step up and be the leader since that’s what her role mainly is for us.”

As she approached the 3-point line, she didn’t initiate the offense this time around. Gore rose and fired a 3-pointer from the top of the key. As it fell through the net, she clapped her hands and yelled emphatically as she backed up down the court.

“When Braci got her third (foul) it had us all a little worried,” Hamar said. “Kenly came up giant right about that time. And that leadership follows with other kids. They see that happening and they jump right in and join.”

Seiling rode the momentum of Gore's shot and just kept adding to it. And as they looked up at the scoreboard, they knew it was happening again.

Seiling’s championship run was going to continue.

With a big second-quarter run, Seiling took down Caddo 54-40 to win its second consecutive Class A state championship. Last year, Seiling went on a late fourth-quarter 8-2 run to take down Hydro-Eakly. This season, the run happened in the second quarter as Seiling outscored Caddo 27-10, behind shooting 6-of-7 from behind the 3-point line.

Seiling (27-1) opened the game with two points from the free throw line, but Caddo (26-3) quickly took the lead from the defending champs.

Emily Robinson picked up where she left off after posting a 36-point, 15-rebound game in the state semifinals. She dominated in the painted area and even showcased her outside shooting. She ended the first quarter with a buzzer-beater behind the arc, which gave Caddo an eight-point lead. The Caddo star finished with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds.

“We knew we had to get it together,” Nyberg said. “We had to work on our defense and stop number 10 (Robinson). So that’s what we did.”

Everything changed in the second quarter as Seiling became more aggressive and began to knock down 3-point shots and Caddo was never able to regain the lead. Seiling was cooking on all cylinders and the outside shooting was coming from all angles. Nyberg, Gore, Keirstin Briggs and Teagan Hamar all knocked down 3-pointers during the run.

Nyberg, the junior guard, shot 5-of-8 from behind the 3-point line to lead the Cats that shot 9-of-14.

“I felt pretty good shooting it," Nyberg said. "I was pretty confident out there."

Seiling is now the winner of eight girls basketball state championships. It's the sixth title since 2016. And without a senior on the roster this season, the Cats have their sights set on another.

“It’s incredible,” Hamar said. “We knew this group was good, but this is one of those deals that it takes a lot of special things to happen for it to come to this point. They’ve got that within them. Their families have helped contribute to this. They’ve got great families that raise them the right way and they do whatever it takes to win.”
