Choctawhatchee football advances to Sweet 16 for 3rd straight year behind Von Keller and defense

FORT WALTON BEACH — The Big Green are in playoff form.

Friday's 49-0 thumping of seventh-seeded Arnold in the Region 1-4A quarterfinals at Joe Etheredge Stadium validated that with Von Keller rushing for four scores and Tamen Zabetakis throwing three touchdowns as the second-seeded Choctawhatchee football team (9-2) extended its win streak to six and set up yet another playoff home in next week's Sweet 16.

Bring on third-seeded Escambia, who beat sixth-seeded Riverside 29-28 Friday night at home to set up next Friday's region semifinal at Joe Etheredge Stadium.

What is FHSAA’s Rural-B tourney? More questions than answers remain

All season long, Choctaw's defense has carried the Big Green. Friday was no different in terms of Terrence Brooks' crew dominating en route to its fourth shutout, but Choctaw's offense stepped up and looked the part of postseason form.

Keller had touchdown runs of 12, 6, 1 and 3 yards, and Zabetakis connected with Keeson Hines-Wheeler for touchdowns of 63 and 32 yards, while Aaron Rowell also hauled in a 55-yarder to push the score to 49-0 at halftime.

Come the second half, starters rested and the clock ran out.

Choctaw improves to 7-0 lifetime against Arnold, including a 2-0 record this season after previously defeating the Marlins 42-19 on Sept. 30. The Marlins were an amazing Cinderella story after an improbable 7-3 regular-season run followed back-to-back winless campaigns. But Choctaw is a seasoned crew coming off back-to-back region finals appearances.

The Big Green will look to make it three straight Elite 8 appearances with a win next week.
