Chiefs trade RB Knile Davis to Packers, who need depth behind Eddie Lacy
This won’t be the answer to all the Green Bay’s offensive troubles, but the Packers answered one question with a trade.
The Kansas City Chiefs sent running back/kick returner Knile Davis to the Packers for what’s expected to be a late conditional draft pick down the road. The Kansas City Star had the news first.

Davis has rushed only once this season for minus-2 yards but has ran for 775 yards with 11 touchdowns in 50 career games, primarily as a backup to Jamaal Charles. Now that Charles is healthy and Spencer Ware has performed nicely, the Chiefs were dealing from a position of strength.
James Starks is expected to be out at least a month, and starter Eddie Lacy could miss Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bears. That news could thrust Davis into an almost immediate role with no other true tailbacks on the roster. The Packers were forced to move receivers Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb into the backfield on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys into backup RB roles, and fullback Aaron Ripkowski could earn a few carries against the Bears. Practice squad running back Don Jackson has yet to be added to the 53-man roster, and it’s not clear if he will before game time in Week 7.
Davis had his best season in 2014 as a runner with 463 yards and two 100-yard games, although fumbles and injuries have been issues in the past. Additionally, he has made a strong impact as a kick returner in each of his three NFL seasons, running back kickoffs for touchdowns in each of his first two regular seasons — and one in the playoffs last season.
The Packers saw something they liked in the preseason finale this year when Davis started against them and rushed 14 times for 58 yards with a touchdown, adding a 7-yard catch.
