Chiefs allow Tyreek Hill to seek trade after extension talks break down
Another one of the best receivers in the NFL might be on the move. The Kansas City Chiefs have given wideout Tyreek Hill permission to seek a trade after extension talks broke down, sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Chiefs believed extending Hill this time around would be difficult. Following Davante Adams' trade to — and extension with — the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs decided to let Hill seek a trade.
More on potential Tyreek Hill compensation: Adams trade (for a 1st and 2nd rounder) would be the template for a deal, but Hill is such a significant centerpiece for #Chiefs offense, it may that two first round picks to get a deal done. That trade came to fruition Wednesday. Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins for five draft picks, including a first and second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
The Dolphins are expected to give Hill a massive contract extension, preventing him from hitting the free-agent market after the 2022 NFL season.
Hill, 28, caught 111 passes for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Tyreek Hill could leave Chiefs in trade
Hill was in line to receive a massive extension before the Adams trade, but that deal may have changed things for Hill and the Chiefs. The Packers received a first- and second-round pick in exchange for Adams, who signed a five-year extension with the Raiders worth $141 million.
The Chiefs will attempt to capitalize on that deal by asking teams for two first-round picks. Hill will look to use Adams' extension as a template once Hill lands with a new club.
The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins are in the running for Hill. The Jets hold the fourth and 10th picks overall in the 2022 draft. The Dolphins hold the 26th pick. Both teams are looking to add an explosive playmaker to help their young quarterbacks take a step forward.
Ultimately, Hill liked the Dolphins better, picking them over the Jets despite the team holding two top-10 picks.
The Chiefs still have tight end Travis Kelce, though would likely explore receiver upgrades in the draft. Patrick Mahomes should still produce elite numbers, though the loss of Hill will hurt. Hill has caught 41 touchdown passes from Mahomes, the most of any player.
