Reports: Bears trading DE Khalil Mack to the Chargers for pair of draft picks

The Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive front got even better.

The Chargers struck a deal with the Chicago Bears on Thursday to trade for defensive end Khalil Mack, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In exchange, the Bears will reportedly receive a 2022 second-round draft pick and a 2023 sixth-round draft pick.

The Chargers all but confirmed the news on Twitter soon after.

Mack had 19 total tackles in seven games last year in Chicago, though he landed on injured reserve after a foot injury required surgery and kept him out for the second half of the season. The six-time Pro Bowler had 50 total tackles in 2020 and a team-high nine sacks.

Mack, 31, has three years left on his six-year, $141 million deal he signed with the Bears.

Mack will now get to team up with Joey Bosa in Los Angeles. Bosa had 51 total tackles and a team-high 10.5 sacks last season, and is among the best pass-rushers in the league.

The two of them should bolster the Chargers' defensive line significantly. The Chargers finished better than only two teams in rushing defense last year while allowing nearly 140 rushing yards per game. They also had the highest third-down conversion rate in the league. The duo could make the Chargers’ defense incredibly tough to go up against next season — especially against an AFC West now with both Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson.
