Charles Barkley is frustrated with Ja Morant: 'All you have to do is dribble a stupid basketball'
Charles Barkley has never been one to hold his tongue.
The Hall of Famer is one of the most outspoken television personalities in sports. He gave his thoughts on Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant's 25-game suspension in an interview published Friday.
“He’s caught with a gun, he gets suspended and then, less than two months later, he gets filmed again on Instagram with a gun and you’re like, ‘Kid can’t be that stupid,’” Barkley said to CNN.
Morant was suspended 25 games by the NBA in March for conduct detrimental to the league. He's allowed to practice and travel with the team, but he has to exit arenas at least two hours before the Grizzlies play.
“(The) kid is getting paid close to $100 million and the only thing you have to do is don’t be a fool," Barkley said. "Just play basketball. Ain‘t like it’s a real job. We’re not like teachers. We’re not like firemen. We’re not like policemen. We’re not somebody who’s in the service. We’re not a doctor. Those are five real jobs. Real jobs (with) people who will never make a lot of money and all you have to do is dribble a stupid basketball and stay out of trouble.”
This isn't the first time Barkley has publicly commented on Morant's troubles. He called out other TV personalities in May who were taking a different stance on Morant. ESPN's J.J. Redick questioned why people wanted to "lay down the hammer" on Morant even though he didn't break a law.
Barkley didn't agree.
"Those guys are just freaking idiots," Barkley said in May. "... When you're making a $100 million a year to play sports, your life changes. There are certain rules and regulations you have to live by. Plain and simple. You can't do stupid stuff. That's the tradeoff."
Morant is expected to be eligible to return for the Grizzlies on Dec. 19 against the New Orleans Pelicans.
