Charges dropped in Odubel Herrera's domestic-violence case, putting pressure on MLB
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera won’t be charged for an alleged domestic assault against his girlfriend. Charges were dropped against Herrera on Wednesday, according to Fox News.
The 23-year-old Herrera was arrested in May after he was allegedly involved in an incident with his girlfriend at a casino in Atlantic City. Police said the victim had “visible signs of injury to her arms and neck.” The police report says those injuries were a result of her “being assaulted by her boyfriend, David Odubel Herrera, during a dispute.”
Herrera was put on administrative leave by Major League Baseball following his arrest. Herrera’s leave was extended in June.
Though charges have been dropped, Herrera still needs to undergo 60 hours of counseling. He’s also still subject to punishment from MLB.
Now that charges have been dropped, it will be up to MLB to decide whether Herrera can return. His case will be re-evaluated Friday, according to Fox News.
MLB has suspended players in similar situations in the past. New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was suspended 30 games after he allegedly choked his girlfriend and fired bullets into his garage. Jose Reyes and Jeurys Familia also received suspensions for alleged domestic assaults despite not being charged.
