LEXINGTON — Since the calendar flipped to 2024, the two worst shooting performances Tennessee guard Dalton Knecht — a near-lock for All-American laurels and arguably the front-runner for the SEC Player of the Year award — has suffered came against, ironically enough, Kentucky and Alabama.
Two of the nation's most porous defensive units, both allowing more than 79 points per game.

Yet Knecht, second in the league in scoring (20.7 points per game), had an identical outing against each: 5 for 14 from the field, a conversion rate of 35.7%. Against the Wildcats on Feb. 3, Knecht still ended up with 16 points, largely due to his free-throw prowess (he went 5 for 5 at the line). Even so, UK aims to duplicate — if not surpass — its previous effort versus Knecht on Saturday, when it faces Tennessee in the regular-season finale for both teams.
"We've just got to make it difficult on him. No easy looks," Kentucky assistant coach Chuck Martin said Friday morning. "If you give him easy looks, he's just too good. He's got size, athleticism, length — and he's got skill. He can shoot the ball beyond the 3."
The Wildcats have to be aware of Knecht's location at all times as they try to avenge last month's 103-92 loss at Rupp Arena.
"Find him in transition. Make it really hard — physical — in the half court," Martin said, "and then no second and third opportunities, because he does do a really good job of going to the offensive glass."
