Georgia football outside linebacker Chaz Chambliss looked to recent history for the Bulldogs’ defense in preparing to go up against Florida and its freshman quarterback DJ Lagway Saturday in Jacksonville.
“We’ve struggled in the past with running quarterbacks,” he said. “We’ve got to prepare and know what’s coming.”
Alabama’s Jalen Milroe threw for 374 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 117 yards and two more scores against Georgia in a 41-34 Bulldogs' loss. Mississippi State’s Michael Van Buren, who can extend plays with his legs, passed for 306 and three touchdowns and wasn’t sacked in a 41-31 Georgia win.
Lagway, who has two starts this season, has four runs of 10 or more yards this season, according to cfbstats.com, with a season long run of 22.
“The athlete that he is, you’ve really got to stay in coverage because he can launch it and he can take it off running ,” safety Malaki Starks. “You’ve really got to be disciplined with your rushing and also within your coverage.”
Lagway threw for 259 yards on 7-of-14 passing with an interception in a 48-20 win against Kentucky on Oct. 19 in the Gators’ last game.
“He's got great size,” coach Kirby Smart said. “He's got great arm strength. He's got really good pocket mobility. He's got a great offense around him. They do a good job, they run the ball and they set up shots off of the run. When you're stubborn about running it, then you open yourself up to a lot of play action shots.”
Freshman Jaden Baugh rushed for 106 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries against Kentucky.
Georgia held Texas to just 259 yards of total offense in its 30-15 upset of then No. 1 Texas in it last game, but the Bulldogs still rank just sixth in the SEC in total defense 304.9 yards per game.

Florida has looked better since coach Billy Napier's job security was on the frontburner in September. The Gators defense has given up an average of 298 yards per game the last three games, but Carson Beck and the Bulldogs offense have something to prove in another homecoming game for the quarterback after being held to 283 at Texas.
