Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos game recap: Everything we know
The Carolina Panthers and quarterback Bryce Young just couldn't pony up against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Here's everything we know from the Week 8 loss:
Final score: Broncos 28, Panthers 14
Keys to the game
Carolina's defensive struggles continued. Denver converted on 11 of their 16 third-down attempts and totaled 390 yards.
Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix took advantage of the lack of coverage and pressure, completing 27 of his 36 throws for 277 yards and three scores. He also recorded his fourth rushing touchdown of the campaign.
The Panthers offense stalled completely after a first-series touchdown drive. Young, in place of starter Andy Dalton, connected on 24 of his 37 passes for 224 yards, two scores and two interceptions.
It was over when . . .
Down 21-7 with under nine minutes left in the third quarter, head coach Dave Canales tried to dial up some trickery on a fourth-and-6 from his team's own 24-yard line. But the punter Johnny Hekker didn't answer the call.
Hekker botched the fake punt call, missing on what would have been a chain-moving pass to safety Sam Franklin Jr. The Broncos took over on downs.
Then, Nix found running back Jaleel McLaughlin on a 9-yard completion for Denver's fourth touchdown of the game, giving them a 28-7 lead at the 6:49 mark of the third.
Players of the game
DL Shy Tuttle: seven tackles, forced fumble, two fumble recoveries
DL A'Shawn Robinson: five tackles, 2.0 sacks
WR Jalen Coker: four receptions, 78 yards, touchdown
What's next?
The Panthers (1-7) will return home to host the New Orleans Saints (2-6) in Week 9.
