Cardinals acquire Shreve from Yankees in 3-player deal
The St. Louis Cardinals took another step in remaking their bullpen by acquiring left-hander Chasen Shreve in a three-player deal with the New York Yankees on Saturday night.
The Cardinals are also getting right-hander Giovanny Gallegos, sending to the Yankees Triple-A first baseman Luke Voit and international cap space. Both teams announced the deal late in the evening.
Shreve, 28, was 2-2 this season with a 4.14 ERA and one save in 39 games for the Yankees, who this week added former Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton to a deep bullpen that already featured close Aroldis Chapman and right-handers Dellin Betances and David Robertson.
Shreve is in his fifth major league season, the first with the Atlanta Braves before four with New York. He has a career record of 14-6 with an ERA of 3.68 in 194 games, all in relief.
Gallegos, 26, has appeared in four games this season 20 in his career with the Yankees, all in relief. Over two seasons, he is 0-3 with a 4.75 ERA in 30 1/3 innings.
In 17 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Gallegos went 2-1 with a 3.90 ERA in 27 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals said in a statement that Gallegos will be assigned to Triple-A Memphis.
Voit, a second-year player, appeared in eight games for the Cardinals this season after playing in 62 games for them a season ago. In a combined 137 plate appearances, he is hitting .240 with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
The 27-year-old appeared in 67 games this season for Memphis, batting .299 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 271 plate appearances.
