Canadiens Should Bring Predators Forward Home

The Nashville Predators were one of the busiest teams in the past offseason, signing big-name players like Steven Stamkos, Brady Skjei, Scott Wedgewood, and Cap-Rouge, Quebec native Jonathan Marchessault.

Unfortunately, the Predators' retooling has not gone as planned. After 13 games, the club sits at the bottom of the Central Division with a 4-8-1 record. Nashville's general manager (and former coach) Barry Trotz was not shy about calling his team out yesterday.

If the Predators become immediate sellers, the Montreal Canadiens should be on the phone to acquire Marchessault and bring him home.

The 33-year-old former Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy winner last played home games in Quebec in 2010-11, when he was a member of the Quebec Remparts during his QMJHL days. He scored 98 goals and 239 points in 254 games in four seasons for a 0.94 points-per-game average.

Considering the Canadiens have roughly $7.4 million available in cap space, Marchessault's $5.5 million contract would fit without issue. He's a natural center but can also play the wing.

Montreal fans can only imagine the offensive damage the team would cause adding another former 40-goal scorer like Marchessault to a lineup that will eventually feature a healthy Patrik Laine.

Given that Trotz loaded up on veterans and the results are not there, the Canadiens would be one of 31 other teams to call Trotz and inquire about who is available, taking advantage of Nashville's dire financial situation.

Acquiring Marchessault won't solve all of the Canadiens' problems today or next year. Still, as a veteran with a championship pedigree, he'd be another leading voice in the room that can help the youngster mature even faster.
