Canada vs Spain basketball recap: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander & Co. oust Spain from Olympics

The Canadian men's basketball team will play its final group phase game against Spain in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France.

Canada, which is led by OKC Thunder guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort, sits atop the Group A standings with four points following a 93-83 win over Australia on Tuesday. Spain is in fourth place with three points following an 84-77 win over Greece on Tuesday.

FINAL: Canada 88, Spain 85

Canada fended off Spain down the stretch to earn an 88-85 victory, and Gilgeous-Alexander finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with three rebounds. Dort went scoreless on 0-for-2 shooting from the floor.

Dario Brizuela scored 16 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for Spain. Llull finished with 13 points and four assists.

Canada went 3-0 in Group A play and finished atop the standings with six points. It'll advance to the knockout round, which begins on Tuesday.

End third quarter: Canada 64, Spain 56

A 3-pointer by Spain's Juancho Hernangomez cut the deficit to 61-56 with 1:41 on the clock, but Canada still entered the fourth quarter with the lead.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 15 points and three rebounds, while Andrew Nembhard recorded 10 points off the bench. Abrines led Spain with 11 points and three rebounds.

Halftime: Canada 49, Spain 38

Canada began to pull away, and Gilgeous-Alexander led the charge. He scored eight points in the quarter, bringing his game-high total to 13 on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor (1 for 2 from deep).

Hernangomez recorded team highs of eight points and four rebounds for Spain in the first half.

End first quarter: Canada 19, Spain 19

Spain went on an 11-2 run late in the first quarter, and Sergio Llull led the charge by scoring six points off the bench.

Gilgeous-Alexander and Brooks led Canada with five points apiece. Dort went scoreless.

Canada will start Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Dillon Brooks, RJ Barrett and Dwight Powell.

Spain will start Lorenzo Brown, Alex Abrines, Xabier López-Arostegui, Santi Aldama and Willy Hernangomez.
