Calvary Christian’s search for a new girls head basketball coach took about five minutes.

Two weeks ago, George Butts told Athletic Director Matt Musgrove he was stepping away. After conversing with Butts, Musgrove walked down the hall to see if a certain former-WNBA-draftee-turned-physical-education-teacher was interested in the position.

Indeed, Ronni Williams was. The school officially announced her hire Thursday. She also added the title of assistant athletic director.

“I’m really excited to see what she does with it because I know it’s going to be great,” Musgrove said. “We’re very lucky.”

The job is Williams’ first as a head coach. The 27-year-old joined Butts’ staff as an assistant a year ago.

She never saw herself becoming a coach before Butts, whom she played for at Atlantic from 2009-2013, asked her to help at Calvary Christian.

“When I started, I was like, ‘Wow, I love this,’” Williams said. “Just being able to teach the game, teach the fundamentals of the game to the girls and see how they bought into it. I loved it.”

Butts spent 25 years leading Atlantic’s girls basketball program before piloting the Lions the last two seasons. He finished 31-9 at Calvary Christian, moving his career record to 546-187. He plans to continue coaching track and field, per Musgrove.

“Coach Butts is a special guy,” Williams said. “He will always be a special guy that plays a special role in my life. He showed me the ins and outs, showed me how to run a team. I’m forever grateful for that. And look, I still have him in my back pocket. He hasn’t gone anywhere.”

Williams won the News-Journal’s Player of the Year award four times and averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in each of her high school seasons. She was the first and only Volusia County player ever named a McDonald’s All-American and signed with the University of Florida.

There, Williams starred, leading the Gators in scoring each of her final three years and earning three All-SEC nods. Upon her 2017 graduation, she ranked 12th in program history in points (1,492) and rebounds (818).

The Indiana Fever drafted her in the second round, 22nd overall, in the 2017 WNBA Draft. She did not make the team but played professionally abroad.

Williams came to Calvary Christian as a P.E. teacher and coach last June, which is also when Musgrove took over as athletic director.

She was the only candidate after Butts resigned.

“When I look at Ronni Williams — and I told her this when we talked — I’m hoping we’re able to keep her for at least a couple years because I have a feeling colleges are going to come calling her,” Musgrove said.

“She’s so well-respected in the basketball community. This is a great opportunity for her. It’s her first job, and I’m thrilled that I get to be a part of her journey. I think the sky is the limit for her in the coaching profession.”
