Butler hires IUPUI's Austin Parkinson as women's basketball coach
INDIANAPOLIS – Austin Parkinson, who last month took IUPUI to its first NCAA tournament appearance, has been hired as Butler coach in women’s basketball.
It has been an eventful week for Butler basketball. Thad Matta was introduced Wednesday as new men’s coach.
“Austin set himself apart from a strong pool of candidates with his experience building a championship-caliber program at IUPUI and his vision for how Butler will achieve similar success within the Big East,” athletic director Barry Collier said Friday in announcing Parkinson's hire.

In 12 years at IUPUI, Parkinson posted a record of 224-141. He inherited a 3-26 team when he took over in 2010-11 and led IUPUI to a 20-12 record by his third season. He was an assistant coach at IUPUI for two seasons.
Parkinson, 40, is a three-time conference coach of the year, once in the Summit League and twice in the Horizon League.
The Jaguars were 24-5 this season, won the Horizon League tournament, upset 15th-ranked Iowa 74-73 and lost to No. 3 seed Oklahoma 78-72 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
IUPUI also won the 2020 Horizon tournament to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament, which was canceled because of the pandemic.
Parkinson succeeds Kurt Godlevske, who was fired after a 1-27 season. The Bulldogs lost their final 17 games.
“Everything is in place at Butler for our program to make noise in the Big East, and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the Bulldogs,” Parkinson said. “Butler is an elite university with a culture of toughness, discipline and selflessness. Both the campus and the city of Indianapolis offer the student-athletes an incredible experience."
He played at Purdue from 2000-04, closing his career tied for 10th on the Boilermakers’ all-time assists list. He led the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio in each of his final three seasons.
He was the first Northwestern High School player to make the Indiana All-Stars team and was inducted into the Howard County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. He became Howard County’s No. 2 all-time scorer behind ABA All-Star Jim “Goose” Ligon of Kokomo.
During four high school seasons, Parkinson’s teams were 77-17, winning one regional and two sectionals. He left the school as career leader in points (1,667), assists (678) and steals (382).
Parkinson’s father, Bruce, is Purdue’s all-time assists leader and a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. His grandfather, Jack, played at Kentucky and is a member of both the Indiana and Kentucky basketball halls of fame.
