Buffalo Bills 34, Miami Dolphins 31: Recap, highlights, next playoff opponent

The Buffalo Bills are massive favorites hosting playoff football at Highmark Stadium against a rookie third-string quarterback.

No. 2 seed Buffalo (13-3) plays the No. 7 seed Miami Dolphins (9-8) in the AFC wild-card round at 1 p.m. Sunday at Highmark Stadium.

It is the fifth time the AFC East division rivals will meet in the postseason.

Bills safety Damar Hamlin tweeted that he will watch the game from home and not attend at the stadium as he continues his recovery from a cardiac arrest on the field less than two weeks ago.

Buffalo Bills will host Cincinnati Bengals in AFC Divisional Round

The No. 2 seed Bills found out who their next opponent will be. The No. 3 seed Cincinnati Bengals survived the No. 6 seed Baltimore Ravens, 24-17, on Sunday evening.

Buffalo will play Cincinnati in the next round at 3 p.m. Sunday at Highmark Stadium. The game will be televised on CBS.

No. 1 seed Kansas City will host No. 4 seed Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on NBC.

Final score: Buffalo Bills 34, Miami Dolphins 31

It wasn't the cakewalk that was expected. The Bills built a 17-0 lead but Miami stormed back with 17 straight to tie the game and then led 24-20 on a defensive touchdown in the third quarter. The Bills rallied with 14 points in about three minutes for a 34-20 lead. Miami scored the final 11 points but went three-and-out and turned the ball over on downs in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie or take the lead.

Josh Allen completed 23 of 39 passes with three touchdowns, two interceptions and a lost fumble. Stefon Diggs had seven catches for 114 yards and Gabe Davis made six receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Matt Milano made 10 tackles with two sacks. Skylar Thompson was 18 of 45 for 220 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Buffalo runs out clock to end game

Buffalo needed one first down to close out the game and got it. James Cook lost a yard on a run before the two-minute warning. Devin Singletary rushed for 4 yards and then ran for 7 yards and a first down with just more than a minute left. The first-down was upheld after a replay official ruling. That ensured Miami wouldn't get the ball back. Josh Allen kneeled on the final play.

Dolphins turn it over on downs - 2:22 4th quarter

Miami began its possession with two incompletions. Skylar Thompson connected with Jaylen Waddle for 25 yards. Waddle lost the ball as he landed out of bounds but it was ruled a catch. Robert Jones was flagged for a false start to put Miami at first-and-15. Thompson threw incomplete on first down, hit Waddle for 14 yards on third down and Salvon Ahmed was stopped for no gain on third down. The Dolphins were called for delay of game on fourth down to push it back to fourth-and-6. Thompson's pass was incomplete on fourth down.

Bills recover after Josh Allen fumble - 4:24 4th quarter

On third-and-11 from the Bills' 49, Josh Allen was stripped by Bradley Chubb on a sack. Offensive tackle Spencer Brown recovered at the Bills' 42. Sam Martin punted 44 yards to the Dolphins' 14.

Khalil Shakir makes huge grab - 6:40 4th quarter

Josh Allen and Khalil Shakir made a big-time play. On third-and-1, Allen aired it out for Shakir, who made a leaping grab for 31 yards.

Dolphins go three-and-out - 8:23 4th quarter

Miami could not tie the game or take the lead. Jeff Wilson ran for no gain, Skylar Thompson threw incomplete and then completed to Jaylen Waddle for 5 yards. Miami tried to go for it on fourth-and-5 from its 38-yard line but Bills coach Sean McDermott called timeout even though the ball was snapped. The Dolphins decided to punt and Thomas Morstead booted it 52 yards to the Bills' 10.

Bills go three-and-out - 9:54 4th quarter

Josh Allen threw two long incompletions for Gabe Davis and was sacked by defensive tackle Zach Sieler on third down. Sam Martin punted 48 yards and the Dolphins will start at their 33-yard line.

Jeff Wilson scores rushing touchdown - Bills 34, Dolphins 31

Miami's offense responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive. Jeff Wilson punched in the touchdown with a 1-yard run. The Dolphins had seven first downs on the possession.

Josh Allen throws TD to Gabe Davis - Bills 34, Dolphins 24

The Bills' big-play offense is back. Cole Beasley took a short pass 29 yards to the Dolphins' 23-yard line and Josh Allen tossed a touchdown to Gabe Davis on the next play. That's two touchdowns in 3 minutes, 11 seconds for Buffalo.

Dolphins offense continues to struggle - 4:14 3rd quarter

Miami gained its first first down of the third quarter but didn't get anything else. Tyreek Hill took a catch-and-run 13 yards and then threw three incompletions. Nyheim Hines muffed the punt but it was recovered by Tyrel Dodson.

Josh Allen throws TD to Cole Beasley - Bills 27, Dolphins 24

Buffalo capitalized off the turnover and has regained the lead. Josh Allen ran for 12 yards on a designed run for a first down to set up first-and-goal. Allen completed to Cole Beasley for the touchdown.

Skylar Thompson intercepted by Kaiir Elam - 7:29 3rd quarter

Buffalo's defensive came up with a turnover. On third-and-19, Skylar Thompson threw deep left and was picked off by rookie Kaiir Elam at the Dolphins' 33.

Bills go three-and-out - 8:46 3rd quarter

Buffalo went three-and-out. James Cook was dropped in the backfield by linebacker Jaelan Phillips on first down, Josh Allen completed to Dawson Knox for 3 yards and Allen threw incomplete for Stefon Diggs on third down. Sam Martin punted 53 yards to the Dolphins' 17.

Miami goes three-and-out - 10:15 3rd quarter

Skylar Thompson threw two passes that his receivers couldn't come up with. Jaylen Waddle was unable to bring in a deep ball off his hands on first down, Jeff Wilson ran for 4 yards and second down and Mike Gesicki didn't track in a deep pass over the middle that was barely tipped by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Thomas Morstead punted 44 yards to the Bills' 32.

Buffalo punts - 11:16 3rd quarter

The Bills opened with an 8-yard pass from Josh Allen to Gabe Davis before going to the rushing attack. Devin Singletary ran for 5, 13 and 3 yards to cross midfield. Allen threw two incompletions and Sam Martin punted 47 yards to the end zone.

Miami takes lead on fumble return touchdown - Dolphins 24, Bills 20

The Dolphins have their first lead. Josh Allen was sacked by safety Eric Rowe on a blitz and defensive tackle Zach Sieler returned it 5 yards for a touchdown.

Dolphins start second half with three-and-out - 14:07 3rd quarter

Miami didn't pick up where it left off. Jeff Wilson ran for 1 yard and Skylar Thompson threw two incompletions coming out of halftime. Thomas Morstead pounted 50 yards and Nyheim Hines returned it 6 yards to the Bills' 30.

Halftime: Buffalo Bills 20, Miami Dolphins 17

Things have gotten interesting. It appeared the Dolphins were going to be blown out of the water but Miami scored 17 points in a row to stay in it. Buffalo has outgained Miami 275-111 but has two turnovers.

Buffalo makes field goal to retake lead - Bills 20, Dolphins 17

Buffalo drove 54 yards in 29 seconds and Tyler Bass made a 39-yard field goal. Allen hit Gabe Davis for 33 yards to start the possession then found Davis for 17 yards. He nearly connected with Stefon Diggs for an incredible touchdown but it was ruled incomplete.

Skylar Thompson throws TD to Mike Gesicki - Bills 17, Dolphins 17

Miami capitalized off the turnover. Tyreek Hill lost 3 yards on a reverse and Skylar Thompson completed to Salvon Ahmed for 12 yards. Hill made a short catch to convert a third-and-2 go give the Dolphins first-and-goal from the 7. Thompson capped the possession with a 7-yard touchdown to Mike Gesicki. Thompson completed to Hill for the two-point conversion.

Jevon Holland intercepts Josh Allen before halftime - :53 2nd quarter

The Dolphins intercepted Josh Allen for the second time in the second quarter. A pass for Cole Beasley was defended by Kader Kohou, the ball popped in the air and it was picked off by Jevon Holland, who returned it 29 yards to the Bills' 18.

Jason Sanders makes third field goal of quarter - Bills 17, Dolphins 9

Miami was unable to gain a first down after the big punt return. Skylar Thompson threw incomplete and Miami was pushed back on second down after a false start penalty. Thompson connected with Tyreek Hill for 13 yards and his pass for Jaylen Waddle was incomplete on third down. Miami called a timeout on fourth-and-2 and elected to kick a field goal. Jason Sanders made it from 37 yards.

Cedrick Wilson Jr. returns punt 50 yards - 1:32 2nd quarter

Sam Martin punted 47 yards but Cedrick Wilson Jr. nearly took it to the house. Wilson returned the punt 50 yards and was tripped up by Martin to save a touchdown. It looked like Wilson would have had a better chance of scoring if he went outside instead of inside on Martin.

Khalil Shakir 54-yard catch called back - 1:47 2nd quarter

On third-and-8, Josh Allen went deep for Khalil Shakir, who appeared to make a diving 54-yard catch. A replay official reviewed the play and it was reversed to an incompletion.

It looked like Miami would go three-and-out but the Dolphins went for it on fourth-and-8, converting on a 13-yard catch-and-run by Jeff Wilson. Miami faced a fourth-and-7 next but opted for a Jason Sanders 48-yard field goal.

Xavien Howard intercepts Josh Allen and fight follows - 6:18 2nd quarter

Xavien Howard intercepted Josh Allen on a deep pass intended for John Brown. Howard returned the pick 49 yards to the Bills' 48-yard line.

Personal fouls were called on Miami defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and Buffalo center Mitch Morse after a shoving match during the interception return.

Jason Sanders makes field goal - Bills 17, Dolphins 3

Tyler Bass' kickoff went out of bounds so Miami started at its 40-yard line. Skylar Thompson completed to tight end Durham Smythe for 20 yards for a first down. Salvon Ahmed rushed for 5 yards and Tyreek Hill took a carry for 9 yards. Thompson was hit on an incompletion and then sacked by linebacker Matt Milano for a 9-yard loss. On third-and-19, Thompson completed to Hill for 19 yards and a first down. Boogie Basham sacked Thompson to set up another third-and-long. Running back Jeff Wilson dropped a pass on third down. Jason Sanders made a 40-yard field goal.

Josh Allen to Dawson Knox TD reversed, Tyler Bass makes field goal - Bills 17, Dolphins 0

Josh Allen opened the second quarter with a 14-yard completion to Dawson Knox. Two plays later, Allen threw to the middle of the end zone for Dawson Knox. It was ruled a 13-yard touchdown but upon review was reversred and called incomplete. Allen was sacked on third down by Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. Tyler Bass made a 33-yard field goal.

Bills leading total yards 172 to 19 after first quarter

Buffalo won a challenge to start its possession. A pass to Gabe Davis was initially ruled incomplete but Sean McDermott won a challenge and the play was reversed to a 19-yard completion. Josh Allen completed to Stefon Diggs for 8 yards and Allen scrambled for 8 yards and a first down. Devin Singletary carried for 8 yards on the final play of the first quarter. Buffalo has 172 yards to Miami's 19 after the first quarter. Diggs' 96 yards receiving in the first quarter are the most by any player in the first quarter of a playoff game since Antonio Brown in 2016, which was also against the Dolphins.

Miami punts after Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle can't come up with catches - 2:37 1st quarter

Miami's star receivers are struggling. Miami earned a first down on a Skylar Thompson pass to Mike Gesicki for 8 yards. Then things went downhill. Offensive tackle Terron Armstead committed a false start, Tyreek Hill had a pass hit him in the chest and Jaylen Waddle couldn't come up with a deep ball that went off his hands against cornerback Tre'Davious White.

James Cook rushes for touchdown - Bills 14, Dolphins 0

James Cook ran up the middle for 1 yard and linebacker Jerome Baker was called for defensive offside to set up a second-and-4. Josh Allen completed to Khalil Shakir for 3 yards and Devin Singletary picked up a first d own with a 2-yard run. Cook took a carry off a misdirection for 12 yards for the touchdown. Buffalo has 14 points in 2 minutes, 50 seconds.

Skylar Thompson throws interception to Dean Marlowe - 7:20 1st quarter

Miami's second possession was a disaster. On the second play, Skylar Thompson was picked off by safety Dear Marlowe, who has stepped up in Damar Hamlin's absence.

Josh Allen TD to Dawson Knox gets Bills on board - Bills 7, Dolphins 0

Josh Allen completed to Stefon Diggs for 20 yards off a play-action to start the Bills' second possession. Diggs caught a screen for 2 yards on the next play and was sacked by Jerome Backer on second down. On third-and-15, Allen dialed up a 52-yard pass to Diggs to the Dolphins' 6. Allen followed it with a 6-yard touchdown to tight end Dawson Knox, who made a one-handed grab in the end zone.

Miami goes three-and-out after Jaylen Waddle drops deep ball - 10:57 1st quarter

Miami went three-and-out. Jeff Wilson began with a 1-yard run and Skylar Thompson went deep for Jaylen Waddle, who got behind safety Jordan Poyer but couldn't make the catch. Thompson threw the ball away on third down instead of trying to run. Thomas Morstead punted to the Bills' 27-yard line.

Bills turns ball over on downs - 11:56 1st quarter

Miami won the toss and elected to defer. Buffalo came out with Josh Allen barely overthrowing an open Stefon Diggs on a deep ball but linebacker Jerome Baker was called for defensive holding. Allen completed back-to-back passes to rookie Khalil Shakir for 17 yards and Diggs for 14 yards. Devin Singletary ran for 2 yards and James Cook carried for 3 yards. On third down, Allen scrambled and fumbled the ball forward near the first-down marker. Buffalo went for it on fourth-and-3 from the Dolphins' 32 with Allen's pass incomplete for Cole Beasley.

Damar Hamlin says he's cheering on team from home

"My heart is with my guys as they compete today! Supporting from home as I focus on my recovery. Nothing I want more than to be out there with them! LFG #BillsMafia," Hamlin tweeted at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Bills vs. Dolphins inactives

WR Isaiah McKenzie, CB Christian Benford, OL Ike Boettger, DT Jordan Phillips, S Jared Mayden, LB Baylor Spector and TE Tommy Sweeney are inactive for the Bills.

QB Tua Tagovailoa, CB Noah Igbinoghene, RB Raheem Mostert, T Kendall Lam, OL Brandon Shell, OL Liam Eichenberg and TE Tanner Conner are inactive for the Dolphins.
