Miami Dolphins 21, Buffalo Bills 19: Final score, recap, highlights

There are only three unbeaten teams in the AFC after two weeks. Two of them face off at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Super Bowl favorite Buffalo Bills (2-0) travel to play the upstart Miami Dolphins (2-0) at Hard Rock Stadium.

Buffalo decimated the Tennessee Titans 41-7 on Monday Night Football but left the game bruised and battered on defense. Safety Micah Hyde is out of the season and the Bills will also be without safety Jordan Poyer, cornerback Dane Jackson and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips.

Final score: Miami Dolphins 21, Buffalo Bills 19

Buffalo ran out of time and is unbeaten no more. The Bills started their final drive at their 23-yard line with 1:25 left. Josh Allen hit Gabe Davis for 18 yards. Three plays later, Buffalo picked up another first down on an Allen completion to tight end Quintin Morris to the Dolphins' 43. That's as close as the Bills got. Allen threw incomplete on first down and Buffalo was called for holding on second down. Allen completed to Isaiah McKenzie for 12 yards on second-and-20 but the Bills couldn't get another snap off before time expired.

Miami is in sole possession of first place in the AFC East and has beaten Buffalo for the first time since December 2018.

Josh Allen set career highs with 42 completions and 63 attempts and finished with 400 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Bills, which ran 90 plays compared to the Dolphins' 39. Running back Devin Singletary led Buffalo with nine receptions and 78 yards with a touchdown.

Tua Tagovailoa completed 13 of 18 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. Jaylen Waddle made four catches for 102 yards and Chase Edmonds ran for two touchdowns for the Dolphins, who only had 41 yards rushing.

Buffalo outgained Miami 497 to 212 and had the ball for 40:40.

When do the Bills play the Dolphins again?

The next time the two teams meet, heat and humidity will certainly not be a factor. Buffalo will host that game on December 18 at Highmark Stadium. Kickoff time has not been determined yet.

Miami has punt blocked out of end zone for safety - Dolphins 21, Bills 19

A butt punt has given the Bills life. Miami went three-and-out and Thomas Morstead had to punt from his own end zone. His punt went off the butt of the Dolphins' Trent Sherfield and out of the end zone for a safety.

Bills turn ball over on downs at the Dolphins' 2-yard line 1:46 4th quarter

Devin Singletary opened the drive with a 6-yard run and Stefon Diggs made a 6-yard reception for a first down. Josh Allen lost a yard on a run and was called for unnecessary roughness when he shoved Christian Wilkins' helmet off. Buffalo converted after a second-and-15. Stefon Diggs made a 16-yard catch and Devin Singletary took a catch-and-run 22 yards. Allen completed to Zack Moss for 6 yards on a third-and-3 and scrambled for 8 yards on third-and-5. Singletary ran up the middle for 4 yards to set up first-and-goal from the Dolphins' 2-yard line. Singletary ran for a yard on first down, Allen lost a yard on second down and Allen was nearly intercepted in the end zone by Xavien Howard on third down. Allen's throw on fourth down was short to an open Isaiah McKenzie. Buffalo has two timeouts remaining.

Miami takes lead on Chase Edmonds rushing touchdown - Dolphins 21, Bills 17

The Dolphins have taken the lead. Chase Edmonds capped a long drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Almost all of the yards came on catches of 32 and 45 yards by Jaylen Waddle. The 45-yarder converted a third-and-22 and gave Miami first-and-goal from the Bills' 7. Two plays later, safety Jaquan Johnson was flagged for unnecessary roughness to set up Edmonds' TD. It's the first time the Bills have trailed this season.

Zack Moss has huge run but Tyler Bass misses field goal- 1:12 3rd quarter

Buffalo running back Zack Moss has fresh legs and ripped off a 43-yard run to start the Bills' possession. It was Moss' fifth offensive snap of the game. Tyler Bass missed a 38-yard field goal attempt. He had made 14 consecutive field goals on the road.

Miami goes three-and-out - 2:00 3rd quarter

The Dolphins didn't help their defense get a respite. Chase Edmonds ran twice and Tua Tagovailoa nearly threw an interception to Matt Milano and Thomas Morstead punted. Miami's offense was only on the field for 1 minute, 40 seconds after the Bills had the ball for more than 9 minutes. The Bills are winning time of possession 27:57 to 15:03.

Bills end marathon drive with field goal - Bills 17, Dolphins 14

Buffalo started deep in its own territory. Isaiah McKenzie made a reception for 7 yards to get a first down by inches and Allen scrambled for 19 yards to plays later. Allen hit James Cook for an 8-yard pass and Cook picked up the first down with a 3-yard run. Tight end Dawson Knox made a catch for 6 yards but took a big hit from Miami defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. Gabe Davis made an 11-yard catch on third-and-1 to get to the Dolphins' 17. James Cook made an 11-yard grab to the 8-yard line. Allen scrambled for 1 yard to set up first-and-goal. Buffalo was pushed back to the 11 after a false start. Allen threw three straight incompletions and Tyler Bass made a 30-yard field goal.

Miami cornerback Xavien Howard is questionable to return to the game due to cramping.

Miami punts to start second half - 13:02 3rd quarter

Tua Tagovailoa returned from a head injury to start the second half. He opened the third quarter with a 22-yard completion to Tyreek Hill but then the Dolphins faced third-and-16 and punted to the Bills' 2-yard line.

Bills don't get any points before half

Buffalo went 45 yards in the final two minutes but came up empty-handed. Josh Allen completed to Isaiah McKenzie for 8 yards to the Dolphins' 41-yard line and then spike the ball with 15 seconds left. Allen found McKenzie for 7 yards but he bobbled the following snap and instead of spiking the ball, threw a pass to Stefon Diggs, who gained 9 yards before the clock expired.

Teddy Bridgewater in at quarterback for injured Tua Tagovailoa

Dolphins backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater entered the game with no success. Bridgewater threw an incompletion, was sacked by Greg Rousseau and then threw another incompletion before Thomas Morstead punted.

Matt Milano called for roughing the passer, Tua Tagovailoa injured - 2:28 2nd quarter

Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is shaken up and is headed to the locker room. Tagovailoa completed a short pass to Jaylen Waddle but was pushed to the ground by linebacker Matt Milano, who was called for roughing the passer. Tagovailoa landed on his back and his head hit the ground. He was woozy and struggled to gain his balance after getting to his feet.

Buffalo punts - 3:47 2nd quarter

The Bills offense found itself in unfamiliar territory, facing third-and-10 or longer for the first time this season. Josh Allen evaded pressure and threw across his body incomplete to Stefon Diggs. Sam Martin punted 31 yards to the Dolphins' 14-yard line.

Tua Tagovailoa throws TD to River Cracraft - 6:45 2nd quarter

Miami put together its longest drive, with Tua Tagovailoa throwing an 11-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver River Cracraft, who was called up off the practice squad. It's Cracraft's second straight game with a touchdown. Tagovailoa went 5 of 5 and hit five different receivers on the 83-yard drive.

Josh Allen throws TD to wide open Isaiah McKenzie - Bills 14, Dolphins 7

Josh Allen opened the second quarter by shedding a tackle and running for a first down on fourth-and-1. Miami linebacker Melvin Ingram sacked Allen and jarred the ball loose but it was recovered by offensive tackle Spencer Brown on the ensuing play. Allen followed up the miscue with a perfectly-placed 27-yard pass to Isaiah McKenzie to the Dolphins' 9-yard line. Allen hit a wide open McKenzie for an 8-yard touchdown.

Bills face fourth down in Miami territory - end 1st quarter

Buffalo closed the first quarter with a 7-yard catch by Devin Singletary on third-and-9. The Bills will open the second quarter with four-and-2 from the Dolphins' 30-yard line.

Jake Kumerow leaves with injury - :58 1st quarter

Buffalo wide receiver Jake Kumerow caught two consecutive passes but injured his left leg as he was tackled along the right sideline by safety Brandon Jones. Kumerow was initially unable to put much pressure on his left leg and headed to the locker room with a trainer.

Chase Edmonds punches in Miami touchdown - Bills 7, Dolphins 7

The Dolphins took advantage of the Bills turnover with running back Chase Edmonds scoring on third-and-goal from the Bills' 1-yard line.

Josh Allen loses fumble - 5:13 1st quarter

Josh Allen turned the ball over on a strip sack by safety Jevon Holland, who came off a blitz. The ball was recovered by linebacker Melvin Ingram at the Bills' 6-yard line. Miami hadn't had a sack in its first two games but has two in the first half.

Dolphins punt on first offensive possession - 6:37 1st quarter

Miami started with a false start and ended with a punt. Fullback Alec Ingold dropped a pass along the right sideline and the Dolphins did gain a first down on a pass interference call on cornerback Christian Benford but Miami couldn't get past its 35-yard line. Thomas Morstead punted 59 yards and Jamison Crowder returned it 6 yards to the Bills' 12.

Josh Allen throws TD to Devin Singletary on fourth down - Bills 7, Dolphins 0

Miami won the toss and deferred to the second half. Buffalo wasted no time with a 28-yard completion from Josh Allen to Stefon Diggs. Devin Singletary took a catch-and-run 19 yards and fullback Reggie Gilliam made back-to-back catches to get to the Dolphins' 8-yard line. Xavien Howard was called for a personal foul after the whistle on Stefon Diggs to give the Bills first-and-goal inside the 5. Melvin Ingram stopped a scrambling Josh Allen on third down and the Bills went for it on fourth down, with Allen hitting Singletary for the score.

The Bills have now scored an opening drive touchdown in each of their last eight games.
