Buffalo Bills 48, Miami Dolphins 20: Final score, highlights, recap

ORCHARD PARK - You wouldn't lose sleep over playing a team that your quarterback is 9-2 lifetime against, right?

You would if that team is the 3-0 Miami Dolphins, who's potent offense scored so many points (70) last week that fans could be forgiven for filing a missing persons report for the Denver Broncos defense.

Still, Josh Allen and the 2-1 Buffalo Bills weren't slouches either last week, slaughtering the Washington Commanders 37-3. In that win, the Bills defense was fearsome, toying with quarterback Sam Howell (nine sacks, five forced turnovers) like a cat with a ladybug.

Here's what's happening at Highmark Stadium. This story will be updated throughout the game.

Bills report card: Buffalo plays perfect game vs. Dolphins

The Bills put forth a brilliant performance all around in their 48-20 blowout over the Dolphins.

Bills report card: Injury to Tre’Davious White overshadows brilliant game vs Dolphins

More on Tre'Davious White's injury

Final score: Bills 48, Dolphins 20

The scoring calmed down after Allen's fourth-quarter touchdown run.

Tre'Davious White suffers Achilles injury

The Bills have now extended their lead to 48-20 as Josh Allen ran 11 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

However, the joy of that was certainly dulled by what happened a few plays before that. On a big fourth-and-1 play, the Bills stopped the Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa was sacked by Ed Oliver. But on that play, Tre'Davious White suffered an ankle injury and was carted off the field.

At first, the fear was it was the same knee he blew out on Thanksgiving night in 2021 which forced him to miss a full year. However, the Bills announced that it's an ankle injury, though the severity is unknown. That's probably better than a knee, and certainly better than an Achilles, but it looks like it was a serious situation as White was noticeably upset and his teammates looked pretty shook, too.

Diggs is unstoppable: Bills 41, Dolphins 20

Stefon Diggs has his 3rd touchdown of the game, this one in the corner of the end zone.

The Buffalo Bills came right back.

Dolphins come out strong

The Dolphins came out of halftime running the ball effectively and it opening things up over the middle.

Eventually Tua Tagovailoa found Braxton Berrios in the corner of the end zone for touchdown.

The Dolphins then botched a two-point conversion. Will it haunt them?

31 points at the half, is that an NFL record?

Not even close.

The record for the most points in the first half belongs to the Tom Brady (of course!) and the New England Patriots. By halftime the Patriots were leading the Tennessee Titans 45-0. They won 59-0.

Quite a half for the Bills

We have reached halftime in Orchard Park and it was quite a shot put on by the Bills on both sides of the ball.

They put up 31 points and held the explosive Dolphins - coming off a 70-point performance last week - to 14.

Josh Allen was surgical as he completed 14 of 17 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns with Stefon Diggs catching five for 107 and two of the TDs.

Just as impressive was the play of the defense. After getting scorched on Miami's first two possessions, the Bills closed the half forcing three punts and getting a fumble recovery in Dolphins territory that led to a field goal and the 31-14 lead.

Now, there's still 30 minutes to go, and Miami will make some adjustments, but that half could not have gone too much better for Buffalo.

Tyler Bass drills a 53-yard field goal

The Bills touchdown machine was put on hold as Miami's defense came up with a big stop in holding Buffalo to Bass's 53-yard field goal.

Buffalo has started possession at the Dolphins 32 after a fumble, but the drive possession went nowhere as Josh Allen was sacked on one play, and Khalil Shakir dropped a deep ball on a perfect pass from Allen. Still, 31-14 Bills.

Bills defense coming up huge

After a rough start, the Bills defense has flipped the script in this game. It forced two Miami punts and now, with two minutes to go in the first half, Matt Milano forced a fumble by Raheem Mostert that was recovered by Terrel Bernard at the Miami 31-yard-line, giving the Bills a golden opportunity to really put up some distance on the scoreboard.

Bills extend lead to 28-14 with dynamic play

After three straight drives ended in punts, just when you thought the defenses might be catching up, the Bills offense produced an explosive touchdown.

Stefon Diggs ran an out route against Kader Kohou on the left side, Josh Allen fired a perfect pass and despite Kohou holding him, Diggs made the catch. A penalty flag flew, but it didn't matter because Diggs broke a tackle by Kohou and raced 55 yards for a touchdown.

Now the Dolphins have a chance for a 2-for-1 double dip. They have the ball with 2:52 to go in the half and they will receive the second-half kickoff. Another big moment here for the Bills defense.

Five possessions, five touchdowns

Hey, Josh Allen had his first incompletion of the game, so I guess that's something for the Miami defense. It's just a master class in offensive football from both sides as we now have five straight possessions that have ended in touchdowns.

This time, the Bills were aided by a 43-yard pass interference penalty against Kader Kohou on a deep shot to Stefon Diggs, and then the Bills overcame an illegal formation penalty when Allen hit Diggs over the middle with an 11-yard scoring pass.

So far Allen is 11 of 12 for 116 yards and two TDs. The Bills have 14 first downs and 181 yards with 10:02 left in the second quarter.

First team to punt might lose: Bills 14, Dolphins 14

The Bills defense is a good unit and has been for several years. But right now, it looks helpless against the Miami offense which has made its two touchdown drives look ridiculously easy. It's hard to envision the Bills stopping this team today, so their offense better be up to the task.

This time, the Dolphins carved up the Bills for 70 yards on just seven plays with De'Von Achane breezing into the end zone on a 10-yard run. The big play was a third-and-8 conversion when Tua Tagovailoa hit Braxton Berrios for 15 yards over the middle.

Josh Allen, yer up.

Back and forth the offenses go: Bills 14, Dolphins 7

This is shaping up to be quite a shootout. Neither defense has had much of a chance as the Bills just made it three touchdowns in a row, and what's good for them is they've scored twice.

This time they used a strong rushing attack to move 80 yards in 10 plays before James Cook scored on a one-yard run.

Allen converted a third-down with a nine-yard pass to Trent Sherfield early in the possession, and after Latavius Murray broke a 29-yard run to the Miami 13, Cook powered his way to a first down with a four-yard run up the middle to the 1 before capping the march that makes it 14-7 Buffalo.

Dolphins answer right back, 7-7

Well, the scoring frenzy most expected is well underway. Miami watched Buffalo's offense march right down the field, and the Bills then watched the Dolphins do the same thing.

However, the Dolphins got a bit lucky as Tua Tagovailoa nearly threw an interception on a ball that was tipped twice, once by each team, before it landed in the arms of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. From there, no luck was needed as Tagovailoa cut through the Bills defense like it wasn't even on the field before De'Von Achane plowed into the end zone from the 3.

So now it's 7-7, and the Bills are serving next.

Bills offense starts on fire

Miami won the coin toss, elected to defer, and the Bills made them pay. Josh Allen put together a near perfect eight-play, 75-yard drive that ended with his TD pass to Gabe Davis from 18 yards out.

Allen threw a beautiful out pass to Stefon Diggs on the play before the touchdown, and when Miami's Kader Kohou committed a late hit out of bounds, the Bills were awarded 15 more yards.

Buffalo Sabres in the house

The early bird gets ... the best spot

Dolphins are missing three key players

In addition to edge rusher Jaelan Phillips who we knew ahead of time was going to miss the game, the Dolphins will also be without two other starters, and both losses are significant.

Center Connor Williams, who Pro Football Focus has graded as Miami’s best run blocker, will miss the game. And safety DeSon Elliott, a solid man in coverage who also is one of Miami’s most reliable tackles, is also out.

Cornerback Eli Apple, who played most of the first two games, played only four snaps against Denver last week so that may just be a healthy scratch situation. These are all areas the Bills should be able to take advantage of.

Damar Hamlin active, will make season debut

Bills safety Damar Hamlin is making his regular-season debut Sunday as the Bills host the Dolphins.
Bills safety Damar Hamlin is making his regular-season debut Sunday as the Bills host the Dolphins.

With safety Jordan Poyer inactive because of a knee injury, Damar Hamlin will make his season debut against the Dolphins.

Hamlin, who is authoring one of the great comeback stories in NFL history after nearly dying on the field in Cincinnati Jan. 2, has already cleared several hurdles on his journey. First practice back in the spring; first contact practice in training camp at St. John Fisher University; first preseason live game action; and now, his first regular-season appearance.

How much he plays is yet to be determined. Hamlin is expected to be a backup along with Cam Lewis as the Bills will start Taylor Rapp in Poyer’s place alongside Micah Hyde. Hamlin will probably get some work on special teams.

The other inactives announced by the Bills are cornerback Kaiir Elam, offensive linemen Germain Ifedi and Alec Anderson, and defensive tackle Poona Ford.
