Buffalo Bills release Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse, Tre White: The list
It's the end of an era on both sides of the ball for the Buffalo Bills.
Buffalo released three of its longest tenured players Wednesday in cornerback Tre'Davious White, safety Jordan Poyer and center Mitch Morse in cost-cutting moves ahead of free agency. The Bills also released cornerback Siran Neal and wide receiver Deonte Harty.
Buffalo began the day more than $40 million over the salary cap. It trimmed most of it in one day.
Poyer, White and Hyde spent seven years in Buffalo and Morse played five seasons with the Bills, a huge chunk of the organization's veteran leadership. The only players remaining on the roster with as many years of service in Buffalo are offensive tackle Dion Dawkins (7), long snapper Reid Ferguson (7), linebacker Matt Milano (7), quarterback Josh Allen (6) and tight end Dawson Knox (5).
Cornerback Tre'Davious White released by Bills
Buffalo is moving on from two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Tre'Davious White, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. Buffalo will designate him as a post-June 1 cut and frees $10.2 million in cap space, with $6.2 million in dead money.
White was selected No. 27 overall by the Bills in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was the Bills' first pick under Sean McDermott. White was a first-team All-Pro in 2019 − when he tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions − and second-team All-Pro in 2020. He had 311 tackles, 18 interceptions, 68 passes defensed, 5 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and 3 sacks with the Bills.
White has been hampered by injuries of late, playing in just 21 of 51 games over the last three seasons. He tore his ACL on Thanksgiving 2021. He made his return exactly a year later in 2022, playing in six regular season games and the postseason, and opened the 2023 campaign healthy but he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 4 and missed the rest of the year.
Safety Jordan Poyer released by Bills
Buffalo opened up $5.7 million in cap space by parting with Poyer.
Poyer was one of the first major additions after Sean McDermott was hired by the Bills in 2017. He signed on the same day as safety Micah Hyde and the duo spent seven years as mainstays on the back end of Buffalo's defense. Hyde will hint free agency next week and has hinted at retirement.
Poyer recorded three straight seasons with at least 100 tackles from 2018-2020, and named first-team All-Pro in 2021, and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2022. His 683 tackles are fifth-most in team history and he's tied for 10th in franchise history with 22 interceptions. Poyer added 11 sacks, 8 forced fumbles and 5 fumble recoveries with the Bills.
Center Mitch Morse released by Bills
The Bills wrangled Morse from the Kansas City Chiefs to lead their offensive line by making him the highest-paid center in the league with a four-year, $44.5 million contract in 2019. He signed a two-year, $19.5 million extension in 2022, the same year he made the Pro Bowl. Morse started 77 games for the Bills and has been Josh Allen's center since Allen was the opening-day starter in 2019.
Buffalo reportedly plans to move Connor McGovern from guard to center this season.
WR Deonte Harty released by Bills
Deonte Harty only lasted one season in Buffalo. He signed a two-year contract last offseason but the Bills have decided to part ways with the return specialist and wide receiver.
Harty made 15 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown and had 27 punt returns for 330 yards. His biggest play was a 96-yard punt return for a touchdown in the season finale against the Miami Dolphins that tied the game and flipped momentum as the Bills clinched the AFC East title.
CB Siran Neal cut by Bills
Buffalo saves $3 million by releasing Siran Neal, a homegrown talent who was taken by the franchise in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. Neal was primarily a core special teamer but filled in at cornerback and recorded 115 tackles, 4 forced bumbles, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery over 97 games in six seasons.
Bills will restructure CB Rasul Douglas
Buffalo plans to restructure the contract of cornerback Rasul Douglas to save about $2.5 million against their cap, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Douglas was one of the best trade deadline acquisitions in the NFL. The Bills sent a 2024 third-round pick to the Green Bay Packers for Douglas and a 2024 fifth-round pick on Oct. 31. He had two two-interception games, was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week in a Week 17 over the New England Patriots and finished with 29 tackles, 4 interceptions and a pick six, 2 forced fumbles and 1 sack in nine games with the Bills.
Von Miller's contract restructured by Bills
Buffalo saved $8.6 million in cap space by restructuring edge rusher Von Miller's contract, which was first reported by ESPN. Miller's contract was reduced from a $17.14 million base salary to $1.5 million plus a $7 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.
