Bucks County wrestlers are coming up big at PIAA championships in Hershey

The second day of the PIAA wrestling championships at the Giant Center in Hershey has wrapped up and, as usual, there were plenty of action and plenty of highlights.

Take a look here at the five things that stood out on Day Two.

Neshaminy's Grace Nesbitt is undefeated and will wrestle for a PIAA gold medal Saturday at 100 pounds.

Can Bucks County duo do it again?

Quakertown's Collin Gaj and Faith Christian's Adam Waters have a chance to do what few Bucks County wrestlers have done and that is win two PIAA titles.

And they're both at the top of their games.

Gaj, who went 49-0 in winning his gold medal last year, has ripped through the 152-pound Class 3A field, including an 11-1 win in his semifinal Friday night. However, to win Saturday, he'll have to face close friend, and nemesis, Kollin Rath of Bethlehem Catholic, who is 3-0 against Gaj in their high school careers.

As for Waters, who takes a 42-4 mark into the Class 2A final at 172 pounds, he has been his usual dominant self. He's won by technical fall in each of his three matches.

Bucks County girls making quite an impressive debut

Five finalists in the first year that girls have been in Hershey for the PIAA tournament. Wow!

But that's the case as a quintet of Bucks County wrestlers will be going for gold beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Giant Center.

Grace Nesbitt (100 pounds) from Neshaminy, Julia Horger (106 pounds) from Conwell-Egan, Savannah Witt (118 pounds) from Palisades, Maya Krieger (170 pounds) from Bensalem and Mackenna Atkinson (235 pounds) from Souderton are all just one win away from a state title in the first year the PIAA is awarding girls state titles.

Oh, and none of them are seniors so they're only going to get better.

With eight District One wrestlers in the Class 2A and Class 3A finals on Saturday, the district record of five combined state champions in one year could be in jeopardy.

Led by Faith Christian's Joey Bachmann (107), Max Stein (152), Cael Weidemoyer (152) and Adam Waters (172), along with Quakertown's Collin Gaj (152) and Hatboro-Horsham's Dom Morrison (107), plus the Bechtold brothers from Owen J. Roberts, Dillon (215) and Dean (285), this is the best chance of surpassing five state champs that District One has ever had.

The last time District One had five PIAA champs was 2006, before many of Saturday's finalists were even born.

Bucks County area freshmen trying to join exclusive club

Faith Christian's Joey Bachmann and Hatboro-Horsham's Dom Morrison both have the chance to do the extraordinary Saturday and that's win a PIAA title as freshmen. And both will try and do it at 107 pounds.

Only 53 freshmen in the 85-year history of the PIAA tournament have done it, including Bachmann's teammate Adam Waters last season.

Bachmann, the top-ranked wrestler in the state and the nation at his weight, will meet unbeaten sophomore Dominic Deputy (49-0) of Chestnut Ridge in the Class 2A final at 4 p.m. while Morrison will take on Cedar Cliff's Aidan Herndon, who is also a freshman, in the Class 3A final, also at 4 p.m.

A better Friday in Hershey

Before girls' wrestling became part of the state championships this year, the PIAA would hold the Class 2A semifinals on Friday night and the Class 3A semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

This was fine for the Class 2A wrestlers because their finals weren't held until Saturday afternoon and they could get a night's rest.

Council Rock North's Eren Sement (right) will go for his third PIAA medal at 127 pounds Saturday.

But, for the Class 3A finalists, they would finish wrestling in the morning Saturday and then not wrestle for gold until Saturday night.

In other words, they had to wait all day, trying to kill time, before taking center stage after a 10-plus hour break. Not an easy thing to do.

Fortunately, with the girls now a part of things, the PIAA holds all three semifinals on Friday night and all three finals Saturday. It's still not a perfect solution since all of the finals in each classification start at 4 p.m. (which doesn't give the competitors their own stage), but it makes things easier on the wrestlers as far as rest and relaxing goes.
