Bruins Netminder Named NHL's Worst Goalie Contract

In a recent article for The Athletic, James Mirtle ranked the worst goalie contracts in the NHL. Bruins newcomer Joonas Korpisalo made the list in the worst way possible, as he landed the No. 1 spot.

Korpisalo has four years left on his contract, making $4 million per season. The Ottawa Senators are retaining $1 million of Korpisalo's salary, so he has a $3 million cap hit for the Bruins.

While the Bruins got a little bit of cap relief for bringing in Korpisalo from the Sens, it is still a relatively hefty cap hit for multiple more years. This is especially so if the 30-year-old continues to struggle so significantly.

Korpisalo landed his big contract after an excellent 2022-23 season split between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings. In 39 games that campaign, he had an 18-14-4 record, a .914 save percentage (SV%), and a 2.87 goals-against average (GAA). However, he has been far from that form since.

Last season, with the Senators, he had a 21-26-4 record, a .890 SV%, and a 3.27 GAA. He also had a rough start for the Bruins in 2024-25, posting a .850 SV% and a 4.57 GAA in two starts.

With this, there is no question that the Bruins have committed to taking a big risk by acquiring Korpisalo as a part of the Linus Ullmark trade. This is especially so when noting that he has had under a .900 SV% in five out of his previous nine seasons and three out of his last four.

We will need to wait and see if Korpisalo can bounce back in Boston. While the start of his tenure has been rough, there is still plenty of time for him to get things on track.
