Browns open up Week 9 with handful of roster moves
The Cleveland Browns head into Week 9 with a new face at quarterback as Bailey Zappe was signed to replace Deshaun Watson on the active roster.
Zappe, a former fourth round pick, actually dropped 300 yards passing on the Browns back in 2022 when he was a rookie with the New England Patriots. Zappe was cut by the Patriots this offseason after they drafted both Drake Maye and Joe Milton in the 2024 NFL draft. He has been on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. Being signed off of another team's practice squad, Giddens must remain on the active roster for three weeks.
Given the injury to not only Watson but also to backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson, it seems quite likely that Zappe will be the primary backup for Jameis Winston this week as the Browns take on the red-hot Baltimore Ravens.
These were not the only roster moves the Browns made, however, as a handful in total were made. Let's check them all out:
Place QB Deshaun Watson on IR
Signed QB Bailey Zappe off of Chiefs' practice squad
Released LB Tony Fields II off of IR
Re-signed RB Garry Brightwell to the practice squad
Released OT Sebastian Gutierrez from the practice squad
