Browns’ offensive struggles good news for Washington

(AP/WJW) — The Cleveland Browns (1-3) visited the Washington Commanders (3-1) on Sunday in a matchup of teams going in different directions.

Deshaun Watson and the Browns were looking to get their season on track after back-to-back losses dropped them to 1-3.

Browns defender announces his season is over

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders were on a three-game winning streak.

Cleveland had won the past two meetings. But Washington went in as a 3 1/2-point favorite on BetMGM Sportsbook.

1st quarter

David Njoku, in his first game back from injury, got things moving for offense, putting the first yards on the board.

The Browns turned the ball over on downs. Commanders ball.

Browns defense shuts down Commanders, putting Deshaun Watson and the Browns offense back on the field.

Commanders defense stops the Browns from putting anything together on offense.

Commanders answer back with a long pass to the 1-yard line.

Browns defenders respond with an interception by Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah at the goal line.

But the Browns can’t make anything happen with it.

Washington takes back the ball and gets it into the end zone.

The extra point is good, and Washington takes the lead 7-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

2nd quarter

Browns make it inside the 25-yard line on a Deshaun Watson pass to Amari Cooper.

The Browns can’t make it to the end zone but settle for a field goal.

Washington is up 7-3.

Commanders take the ball down the field to the 30.

The Browns defense holds them to a field goal.

Washington is up 10-3 with 8:41 in the second quarter.

Browns Rodney McLeod is questionable to return with a face laceration, per the team.

Washington scores again, up 17-3 with a few minutes left in the half.

Washington puts together another run. The score is 24-3 at the end of the half.

3rd quarter

The Browns made it into the Commanders’ end zone on their first drive, with a 19-yard pass to Amari Cooper.

But Watson’s next two passes were incomplete.

They then caused a delay of game, incurring a 5-yard penalty, and opted for a field goal — which was good, making it 24-6.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah’s sack took a yard away from the Commanders at Cleveland’s 26-yard line.

But the brief delay did little to stop their unrelenting drive to the 3-yard line, where Jeremy McNichols rant it in, making it 31-6 with a successful extra point.

Up until this point, the Browns had run no more than 3 yards in a single play.

D’Onta Foreman then made a 25-yard run before being pushed out at Washington’s 40-yard line.

A short pass from Watson was intercepted, marking the Browns’ first turnover this game.

  • Injuries: Denzel Ward (hamstring) and Charley Hughlett (rib) are out for the remainder of the game.

The Commanders’ next drive ended in a successful field goal, making it 34-6.

4th quarter

The Browns’ first drive of the 4th quarter pushed as far as Washington’s 39-yard line, before being pushed back. Watson was sacked twice and the Browns were forced to punt.

The Browns’ next drive saw them reach Washington’s 8-yard line.

Watson then made a 10-yard pass to Jordan Akins for a touchdown.

Dustin Hopkins’ extra point was good. It was then 34-13.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah went out for cramping, and was questionable to return, the Browns said. Grant Delpit was also evaluated for a head injury.

Washington’s next drive ended in a punt.

At the two-minute warning, the score was still 34-13.

The Browns made it to Washington’s 35-yard line before a turnover on downs and the clock ran out.

The Commanders won 34-13.

Players to watch

Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will likely draw the assignment of shadowing dynamic Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels, a dual-threat quarterback capable of beating any defense with his arm or legs.

Owusu-Koramoah is excellent at playing in space and will need to react when Daniels, who has already rushed for 218 yards and four TDs, gets outside the pocket. He leads the Browns with 34 tackles.

Key matchup

Watch the Commanders’ pass rush versus the Browns offensive line and Deshaun Watson.

As good as Daniels and Washington’s offense has been, the defense struggled until last week at Arizona. One of the big issues has been a lack of pressure, which has made a pieced-together secondary struggle more in coverage.

Watson has been sacked a league-high 19 times this season, and he needs to get rid of the ball quicker. He may have more time to throw Sunday than in previous games.

Nick Chubb returns to Browns practice

Key injuries

Cleveland’s offensive line remains dinged up.

Left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee) and right tackle Jack Conklin (knee) are questionable. Wills has played in one game and Conklin has yet to make his 2024 debut following reconstructive surgery.

Tight end David Njoku, who missed the past three games with a high ankle sprain, is listed as questionable but is likely to play.

Backup running back Pierre Strong (hamstring) is also questionable.

Defensive end Alex Wright (triceps) underwent season-ending surgery this week.
