Brother of Aqib Talib pleads guilty to murder after youth football game shooting
The brother of former NFL player Aqib Talib pled guilty to murder stemming from an interaction at a youth football game last year.
A Dallas County, Texas grand jury indicted Yaqub Talib on a murder charge in September 2022 after authorities say he shot Michael Hickmon during a youth football game in a Dallas suburb the month before.
According to multiple reports, Talib pleaded guilty this week and will receive a sentence of 37 years in prison. He will formally be sentenced on Aug. 7, where victim impact statements are also expected to be heard.
Police contend that during the game, opposing coaches got into an argument and a person, later identified as Talib pulled out a gun. Hickmon was struck several times and later died at a hospital.
Yaqub and Aqib Talib, who was not charged with a crime, were coaching the North Dallas United Bobcats. Both brothers had sons who played for the Bobcats. Hickmon’s son played for the Dragon Elite Academy, the Bobcats' opponent that day.
Aqib Talib retired from the NFL in 2020 after playing 12 seasons for multiple teams. Hickmon's family filed a lawsuit against multiple entities, including the Big XII Sports League and Family Services, accusing them of not providing enough security and failing to provide vet people who coach in the league.
Both Aqib and Yaqub Talib are defendants in the lawsuit, which seeks more than $1 million in damages.
