Brock Purdy does it again for San Francisco 49ers, one win away from first Super Bowl

It wasn't his best performance, but Brock Purdy found a way to come up big once again for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Phoenix-area native, who starred at Gilbert Perry High School, came through with a game-winning drive in the 49ers' 24-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in an NFC divisional round playoff game Saturday night at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Purdy drove the 49ers, trailing 21-17 with 6:18 to play in the game, 69 yards in 5 minutes and 11 seconds for the go-ahead touchdown.

Christian McCaffrey ran for a 6-yard touchdown with 1:07 to play, and the 49ers came back from a 21-14 deficit to advance to their second straight NFC championship game next week. They will host the winner of Sunday afternoon's other NFC divisional playoff game between the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The winner will advance to Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.

Purdy, 24, has put together a dream of a first two seasons in the NFL. Once the very last pick in the NFL draft in 2022, he got his opportunity to start for the 49ers late last season and led San Francisco to the NFC West title.

At one point considered a strong NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year candidate this season, Purdy is already being compared to a 49er in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Purdy is now 3-1 in postseason games. The third-string quarterback when his rookie season began, he led the 49ers to two playoff wins last season before suffering an elbow injury early in the NFC championship game at Philadelphia and couldn't throw well after he was forced back into the game in his team's 31-7 loss to the Eagles.

Saturday saw Purdy overcome rainy weather in the Bay Area and although he didn't look sharp at times, completed passes when his team needed it the most. Purdy finished the game against the Packers 23 for 39 for 252 yards with a touchdown and an 86.2 quarterback rating.

"It's a team effort. Defense was making their stops, we felt like, 'Man, we gotta do something,'" Purdy told FOX's Erin Andrews on the field after the game. "For myself, calm down, go through reads, take what they give you and put a drive together. We needed it when the season's on the line."

Purdy also had to overcome the loss of one of his top targets, 49ers wide receiver/ball carrier Deebo Samuel, who left the game with a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

Known for his accuracy as a passer, Purdy wasn't always on target on Saturday the way he was back in Week 4 of the regular season, when he completed 20 of 21 passes for 283 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. His 95.2 percent completion rate that day set a new franchise record for best in a single game.

Now Purdy, who led Iowa State to a Fiesta Bowl win in 2021 as a junior, gets another shot at leading his team to a Super Bowl and can add to an already storybook start to his NFL career. Even if Samuel can't play next week, the 49ers have the weapons at Purdy's disposal to have success, with McCaffrey, star tight end George Kittle and former Arizona State Sun Devil Brandon Aiyuk, always a downfield threat.

Purdy continues to mature as a quarterback, which was clear in his response to how he might look back on this game one day in the future. He's had his critics when the 49ers have lost games, but continues to win a lot.

Purdy is 20-5 in his career, including playoffs, as the 49ers' starter.

"It's four quarters for a reason. So the way it started, it's like, I gotta be better, I gotta play efficient football," Purdy told Andrews. "But when it comes to it, with the season on the line you gotta make it happen for your boys around you. When I watch the film down the road in my life, it'll be a good one to watch."
