Red Sox infielder Brock Holt hits for 1st cycle in postseason history
The New York Yankees would like to forget Monday night happened.
In the midst of giving up a 16-1 lead in the ninth inning, they yielded the first cycle in postseason history to Boston Red Sox infielder Brock Holt when he hit a home run that cleared the right field wall at Yankee Stadium.
Holt’s two-run home run marked the final runs on the board in Boston’s 16-1 win. He finished the night 4-for-6 with five RBI, three runs scored and, of course, a single, a double, a triple and a home run.
Holt didn’t expect to be in the lineup
“Is that the first one ever?” Holt asked when informed of his achievement in a postgame interview with TBS. “It was a fun night. Offensively we were clicking on all cylinders. … Tonight’s a night I’ll remember for a long time.”
Holt didn’t even expect to play on Monday. He told Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan that the news that he was in the lineup came as a surprise due to his career performance against Yankees starter Luis Severino.

The left-handed hitter dropped all four of his hits in right field. Well, all of them except that one that landed over the right field wall.

Holt completes cycle with Yankees catcher on the mound
To add insult to injury for the Yankees, Holt’s cycle-clinching home run came against a position player. The Yankees were so decimated by the ninth inning that backup catcher Austin Romine took the mound to finish the game.
Romine was an out away from leaving the inning unscathed. He induced a pair of groundouts to shortstop Xander Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers to start the inning. But he walked Ian Kinsler before leaving a knee-high pitch over the inside of the plate that left the yard on Holt’s line drive.
It was the worst postseason loss in Yankees history and certainly one of the best days of Holt’s career.
