Body camera footage shows police officers pointing guns at Yankees GM Brian Cashman
Police body camera video released on Wednesday provided a firsthand account of the brief, albeit tense confrontation between officers in Darien, Connecticut, and an unsuspecting New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
The incident took place on Aug. 9 and was a case of mistaken identity. Cashman's white Jeep Wrangler matched the description of another vehicle police were searching for in the area.
The video shows officers with guns drawn ordering Cashman out of his vehicle. Though confused, Cashman is cooperative.
Complicating matters was the fact that Cashman’s Jeep had been reported stolen six days prior in New York. Cashman had retrieved his vehicle from the impound, but it was still listed in the stolen vehicle database at the time he was pulled over.
Once identified, Cashman was quickly released.
“You look very familiar to me,” one officer is heard saying in the immediate aftermath.
“I’m the GM of the New York Yankees,” Cashman replies.
The same officer apologizes for the embarrassment caused by the dramatic stop.
Hours later, Cashman offered praise to the officers for performing their duties in a smooth and professional manner.
“They’re clearly very professional and trained and they asked me to turn my car off, exit the vehicle, walk backwards towards them…they were executing their duty.”
“The public should take encouragement when someone is in a stolen vehicle they’re not going to get very far,” Cashman added.
At the time he was pulled over, Cashman was driving the Jeep to the Norwalk police station so it could be processed for an investigation related to the vehicle being stolen.
It’s an almost unbelievable set of circumstances, but as the video shows it was very real and very scary.
