Boca Raton girls take top spot among local teams in first FHSAA rankings

The first power rankings of the 2023-24 girls basketball season are here after the Florida High School Athletic Association's inaugural release on Tuesday.

Below, take a look at how your favorite local programs stack up and why, plus which of last year's 15 playoff teams are on the route back to playoffs.

Boca Raton comes out on top at No. 25 overall

With wins over stacked local teams like Palm Beach Gardens and Somerset Canyons in overtime, along with out-of-state powerhouses like Fleming (VA), the Bobcats are Palm Beach County's top squad. Senior Courtney Lowe and sophomore Tatyana Campise-Pinkney have been dominating the court for Boca, building a battle-tested road back to the 7A playoff.

Boca's 9-5 record has been full of successes, and even in loss, lessons against 3A final four squad King's Academy and 6A region runner-up Blanche Ely are setting up the Bobcats to go the distance. The 2023 region semifinalists are No. 6 in their classification, third in Region 4 behind No. 19 overall Western − who defeated Boca by just four points in a December tournament matchup − and No. 21 Doral Academy, and No. 1 in District 13.

Atlantic High girls basketball is still undefeated as the Eagles' 2024 slate of games begins.

The Eagles are still undefeated with nine straight wins as they prepare to keep the streak alive with their January slate. But if the FHSAA algorithm appears to favor undefeated records, as we saw during the 2023 football season, why is it that the 6A crew doesn't sit higher in the ranks? When classification and state leaders like No. 3 overall St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 6 overall Blanche Ely have schedules touting ratings of 18.24 and 17.19, respectively, Atlantic's 2.65 struggles to hold a candle.

But the impact of the players themselves can't be calculated, and it's hard to put a number on the value that senior captains Teresa Pierre and Elaine Sullard, not to forget sophomore Aiyana Sheely, bring to the court. The Eagles proved themselves with a 54-45 win over a gritty Palm Beach Lakes. Time will tell if they remain lossless as they ready for meetings with Boca, Seminole Ridge, and American Heritage-Delray in the coming months. As it stands, they're No. 5 in 6A, fourth in Region 4, and second in District 13 behind Blanche Ely.

No. 37 Palm Beach Gardens not far behind

Just two Ls on the year − a season opener loss to Boca and a 66-60 overtime defeat from Bullitt East (KY) in a Christmas tournament − have prevented the Gators from a perfect record. Their 10 wins though, forged by the unstoppable force that is senior Kyana Poitier, who stands at 20th in the nation with an average 16.3 rebounds per game, are a sign of what the postseason is bound to bring for Gators.

Chomping at the bit to rewrite last year's script of a 63-60 overtime loss in region semifinals to Oak Ridge, Gardens is No. 12 in Class 7A, second in Region 2 behind reigning state champ and No. 8 overall Dr. Phillips, and No. 1 in District 7.

Could these former playoff teams make a comeback?

No. 170 overall Boynton Beach (9-2)

It's not the most likely, but anything can happen in high school sports.

Despite a lackluster overall ranking, the Tigers are fourth in Region 4. Alas, Boynton is bound for a battle against region top-seed and No. 12 overall American Heritage-Plantation, with whom the program also shares District 14, and a schedule rating of -3.22 doesn't make an at-large bid seem all too possible.

No. 172 overall Palm Beach Lakes (6-6)

If Lakes can stake revenge on last season's two-point district championship loss to Gardens, there's certainly a chance. A majority of the Rams young roster, highlighted by Ezria Pierre-Louis, Zuri Miller-Whiteside, and Myla Jones, came back for what it hopes will be glory in 2024, and this year, Lakes won't have to face former team member-turned-rival Gator Cienna Thigpen on the court after her graduation last spring.

Should there be any wild card in your deck, it should absolutely be longtime coach Cassandra Rahming's Rams.
