Blues goalie fined $5K for hitting Nashville Predators' Luke Evangelista in face with stick

St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington was fined 0.00083% of his 2023-24 salary, the NHL announced Sunday.

The $5,000 punishment came a day after Binnington, who carries a $6 million salary cap hit, introduced the butt end of his stick to the face of Nashville Predators forward Luke Evangelista with 46 seconds remaining in the Blues' 5-2 loss in St. Louis.

Evangelista skated behind the net, to Binnington's right, when Binnington subtly shoved his stick toward Evangelista as he skated by. The hit momentarily stunned Evangelista, who didn't appear to be injured during the play.

Binnington was assessed a minor high-sticking penalty for his actions. His $5,000 fine was the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

Evangelista burned Binnington for a goal 13 minutes, 9 seconds into the second period to give the Predators a 2-1 lead. It was Evangelista's 10th goal of the season.

The play wasn't Binnington's first run-in with a player with ties to the Nashville Predators. He was suspended for two games in March 2023 for smacking the Minnesota Wild's Ryan Hartman, a former Predators forward, in the face with his blocker after Hartman scored a go-ahead goal.
