Mix Diskerud was one of three no-shows on the first day of the U.S. men's national team's training camp on Monday. The midfielder, along with Clint Dempsey and Marc Pelosi, had some business to take care of before joining the USMNT at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Now, we know what Diskerud's deal was.

The 24-year-old Diskerud was busy putting pen to paper on a contract with MLS expansion side New York City FC and mugging for the camera with club sporting director Claudio Reyna.

The big coup here is that Diskerud agreed to join NYCFC as a non-Designated Player. That allows the club to use its third and final DP spot on one more big-salaried star to join current DPs Frank Lampard and David Villa. Officially, NYCFC acquired Diskerud as a free transfer through the club's No. 1 position in the MLS Allocation Order. He gives coach Jason Kreis a playmaker in the NYCFC midfield until Lampard joins the team this summer.

The signing ends the limbo of Diskerud, whose contract with Norwegian side Rosenborg expired at the end of last season. He had been linked in the past with other MLS clubs, namely the Columbus Crew and Portland Timbers.

Diskerud is just the latest USMNT player to leave Europe and choose to play in MLS. Last month, winger Brek Shea decided to put his disappointing Premier League stint at Stoke City behind him and sign with MLS expansion side Orlando City. Striker Jozy Altidore, whose struggles in England with Sunderland have been well-chronicled, is being linked with a summer move to Toronto FC.

Diskerud told NYCFC that he "can't wait to live in New York," which he's visited quite frequently and where his favorite baseball team plays, according to ESPN's Doug McIntyre.
