Former Florida quarterback Will Grier is transferring to West Virginia.

Grier is currently serving a 12-month suspension handed down by the NCAA in October for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Grier would not have been able to return to the Gators until the seventh game of the season and his role as starter would not have been assured.

The news was first reported by ESPN and West Virginia made it official later Wednesday afternoon.

As a transfer, Grier will have to sit out the entirety of the 2016 season because of NCAA transfer rules, but he’ll still have two years of eligibility remaining. But because he's suspended for testing positive for a banned substance, this is obviously not a normal transfer. Grier would likely have to get a waiver from the NCAA to be immediately eligible in 2017.

Grier led the Gators to a 6-0 start in 2015 before the suspension and completed 106 of 161 passes for 1,204 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

West Virginia currently has six quarterbacks on the roster this spring, including starter Skyler Howard, who is entering his final year of eligibility.
