One of Notre Dame’s top-rated freshmen will miss the entire 2015 season.

Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday night that cornerback Shaun Crawford suffered a torn ACL, ending his freshman season before it even began.

According to BlueandGold.com, Crawford, a Lakewood, Ohio, native, “had seen extensive playing time” throughout preseason camp. The four-star recruit was expected to see plenty of action as a nickel cornerback and on special teams.

Kelly has been complimentary of the 5-foot-8, 180-pound Crawford’s play throughout camp.

“We knew Crawford was a football player,” Kelly said Aug. 6 per BlueandGold.com. “When I saw him block three extra points when the game was over coming off the edge, I said, ‘That guy’s a football player.’ I don’t care if he’s 5-foot-5. We’re going to take him.”

Rivals rated Crawford as the 82nd-best player in the 2015 recruiting class. Behind quarterback Brandon Wimbush (No. 60), Crawford was the second-highest rated prospect in Notre Dame’s recruiting class.
