4-star DE Auston Robertson signs with Michigan State

Michigan State got the letter of intent from defensive end Auston Robertson on Wednesday.

Robertson, a four-star defensive end and the top recruit in the state of Indiana according to Rivals, didn't sign with the Spartans on National Signing Day. He tweeted at the time that he was re-opening his recruitment but that Michigan State was still his No. 1.

Why did he do that? Well, he was facing a battery charge from an incident in his hometown of Fort Wayne on Jan. 13. He entered a diversionary program earlier this month regarding the charge and it could be dropped entirely.

“Our decision to accept Auston Robertson’s signed National Letter of Intent and Big Ten Tender has been evaluated over the last three months while utilizing all resources available to us to thoroughly review his situation,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said in a school statement.

“Our relationship with Auston began last summer when he committed to Michigan State. When we accepted his verbal (commitment), we also made a commitment to him and his family. We elected not to sign him in early February, and since then he has been accepted into a pretrial diversionary program and must continue to satisfy those requirements. Given all the information available to us, we believe Auston should be provided with an opportunity to begin his education and playing career at Michigan State.”

The statement was Dantonio's first public comments regarding Robertson due to NCAA rules. Schools can't comment about commits directly until the letters of intent are signed.

According to Rivals, Michigan State's class moves from No. 20 to No. 18 in the 2016 team rankings because of Robertson's addition.
