Millionaire Twins prospect Alex Meyer making $63 a day as a substitute teacher
Some say baseball is a bore, but for ballplayers, the offseason is an even bigger snooze.
Just ask Alex Meyer, Baseball America's No. 59 rated prospect, who took his mother's advice and decided to become a substitute teacher rather than sit around the house all winter, as detailed in a fantastic Indianapolis Star feature (h/t Big Lead).
The money isn't quite the same, since Meyer signed a $2 million deal out of the University of Kentucky and makes just $63 a day substituting in his hometown of Greensburg, Ind., but the investment in his future is just the same.
"Hopefully, I'm able to play baseball and have a nice, long career," Meyer, 23, told the Indy Star. "But you never know what's going to happen with that. So you've always got to be able to have something on the ready."
Meyer's favorite part about teaching -- "you can't beat" summers free, he told the paper -- may seem a bit strange for a guy who's march to the big leagues seems almost inevitable.
Since capturing Indiana Mr. Baseball honors as a Greensburg High senior, he earned All-SEC honors in his third and final season for the Wildcats, grabbing the attention of the Washington Nationals, who selected him 23rd overall in the 2011 MLB draft. After being traded to the Minnesota Twins last year, the 6-foot-9, 220-pound right-hander posted a 3.21 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 70 innings for the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats.
In February, Meyer will report to Twins training camp in Fort Myers, Fla. Until then, the only curveballs he'll be slinging will be in the form of a pop quiz question in a Greensburg elementary, middle or high school classroom.
