CHICAGO — The Blackhawks have named their first captain since Jonathan Toews — 17-year NHL veteran Nick Foligno.

Foligno, 36, is entering his second season with the ‘Hawks after being known for being a great mentor to the club’s young core, including phenom Connor Bedard.

The Blackhawks did not have captain last year following the departure of three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews. He sat out last year after suffering from a chronic fatigue issue.

Foligno was named an alternative captain last season and ranked third on the team in points with 37.

“The fact that Danny, Kyle, Luke and my teammates have all put their faith in me to lead this amazing group is extremely humbling, and I thank them all for the opportunity,” Foligno said. “I am beyond honored to serve as captain for this storied franchise and its incredible fans, especially during such a pivotal time toward the team’s future.”

He was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft and has also played for the Blue Jackets, Senators, Bruins and Maple Leafs.

Foligno is the 35th captain in team history.
