Birth of Kenny Gajewski's new baby headlines strong week for Oklahoma State softball

STILLWATER — The most exciting moment of the week for the Oklahoma State softball team came before it ever got on the field, then the Cowgirls went on to outscore four opponents 38-4 in another perfect week.

OSU coach Kenny Gajewski welcomed a new family member with the birth of his son Gray on Monday evening — the day after OSU returned from a two-week Florida trip.

So it’s safe to say Gajewski hasn’t had much sleep lately.

Yet his team’s offense was wide-awake in the first games of the season at Cowgirl Stadium.

Here’s a look at what we learned about OSU last week, with the Big 12 Conference opener approaching:

Back to Wark

Micaela Wark had a bit of a slow start to the season, but has returned to the form of her breakout freshman last year.

She homered in three of the four games last week, going 5 for 7 with five RBIs and six runs scored. For the season, she is now batting .343 with four home runs and nine RBIs.

Wark led the power charge for OSU, which hit 10 home runs in the week — and that included a homerless game in the 10-0 win over South Dakota State when a cold front came through Stillwater just before the game and resulted in strong winds blowing in from left field.

Caroline Wang hit two home runs to give her a team-best six for the season. And freshman Karli Godwin also homered twice. She now leads the team with 20 RBIs.

Strong week from OSU pitchers

Five Cowgirl pitchers combined to allow three earned runs over 23 total innings for the week.

Freshman Katie Kutz turned in two solid performances, allowing one run over 7 ⅓ innings and improving her record to 3-0. She threw two perfect innings in relief to finish off the 10-0 win over South Dakota State.

Ivy Rosenberry allowed just her second run of the season, though it was unearned as a result of a passed ball. She has allowed one earned run over 29 innings and also leads the team with 33 strikeouts.
