Bills vs Steelers moved to Monday. Here is the new gameday forecast
While moving the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers Wild Card matchup to Monday afternoon will avoid the worst of the winter storm in western New York, attendees can still expect frigid conditions and additional snow.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the game would be moved a day to Monday during a press conference in downtown Buffalo on Sunday, citing dangerous conditions. Orchard Park received a foot of snow by Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
What will the teams and the fans be facing on Monday? Conditions won't be as clear as you might think.
How much snow is forecast for Bills vs Steelers playoff game?
There will be bands of lake effect snow over the city of Buffalo to start the day on Monday, said Weather Service meteorologist David Thomas. The snow bands will then lift northward, further away from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park through the afternoon. Orchard Park is forecast to receive up to 1 to 3 inches of snow during the daytime hours Monday.
“The bands will be weakening there for Monday and likely to be north of the Orchard Park area,” Thomas said.
The winter storm warning for northern Erie County expires at 1 p.m. on Monday. There will be some lingering lake effect snow in Niagara and northern Erie County in the evening.
Wind conditions for the Bills playoff game
There will not only be less snow in the forecast on Monday, but also more favorable wind conditions. During the later afternoon hours on Monday, winds will be out of the southwest at 15 mph, with gusts of 20 to 25 mph.

Weather forecast for Buffalo Bills game: Temperature and wind chill
While the wind and snow conditions will be more favorable on Monday, it will still be bitterly cold, especially in comparison to the mild start to winter. Highs are expected to be in the upper teens, and even the modest winds will produce a wind chill in the low single digits, Thomas said.
“Anyone traveling or outside on Monday evening should dress in warm layers and be prepared for those colder temperatures,” Thomas said.
I do not disagree with the Buffalo Bills vs Pittsburgh Steelers game being postponed. You need your emergency vehicles and fans to be able to get to and from the game.
With that said, the National Weather Service has made it clear that the wind chill in Kansas City is… pic.twitter.com/77C8V11201— Big E (@ian693) January 13, 2024
The National Weather Service recommends several ways to stay warm during low wind-chill weather.
Stay dry by wearing a waterproof top layer and waterproof boots.
Stay warm by wearing a hat and gloves or mittens.
Dress in loose layers to insulate yourself with trapped air.
What would conditions have been if the Bills game wasn’t moved?
During Hochul’s Saturday press conference, Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz outlined the reasoning behind the postponement of the Bills home playoff game. A travel ban went into effect at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
“We want our Bills to win, but we don’t want 60 to 70,000 people traveling to the football game in what is going to be horrible conditions,” Poloncarz said.
AccuWeather issued a statement Friday evening warning of dangerous lake effect snow conditions for the original game time. The concern, AccuWeather chief video meteorologist Bernie Rayno said, had been for the safety of players and fans during the game or traveling before and after.

“Travel in that intense band of snow will be next to impossible, and some motorists may become stranded, which can quickly escalate to a life-threating emergency, as we tragically saw in the Buffalo area during the blizzard just before Christmas 2022,” Rayno said, in a statement.
The storm delivered on its promise, dropping 32 inches of snow by Sunday morning in Alden and 27 inches in Hamburg in the same time frame. The 8.6 inches of snow that fell at the Niagara Buffalo International Airport weather station was a new record for Jan. 14, beating the old mark by 0.9 inches. Whiteout conditions were widely reported, including in media reports and on social media.
