The Buffalo Bills defense was without two of their top names against the Chicago Bears in their first preseason outing.

While the 33-6 loss featured a solid performance from the first-team defense, the group did not have the likes of pass rusher Von Miller and linebacker Matt Milano in it.

All part of the plan, according to Sean McDermott.

Milano, who is returning from a season-ending leg injury, is still in his recovery program.

In terms of Miller, it sounded more like a status quo for him. McDermott admitted Buffalo's medical staff did not want to force Miller out there too soon, but McDermott added Miller historically does not play much in the preseason anyway.

Regardless, the major takeaways is that neither player had a stepback keeping them out. It what the team felt like was best.
