Bills extend contract of kicker Tyler Bass: The details
Draft, develop and re-sign is an oft-used mantra of Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane regarding the construction and maintenance of the team’s roster.
You can also add extend to that list. That’s what the Bills are doing with kicker Tyler Bass. The 2020 sixth-round pick is heading into the final year of his rookie deal, meaning he was eligible to receive a contract extension, and the Bills confirmed Friday morning he has signed a four-year extension.
Details of Tyler Bass contract
Reports peg it at $21 million in total with $12.3 million of that guaranteed, and Bass has certainly earned it.
Since joining the Bills, the 26-year-old has been one of the most reliable kickers in the league. He has made 83 of his 97 career field goal attempts (85.6%), with five of the 14 misses coming from outside 50 yards. On extra points, at a time in the NFL where that is no longer automatic, Bass has made 156 of 160 (97.5%).
Last year he went 27 of 31 on field goals and 48 of 50 on extra points.
Bass has scored 405 points to date which ranks him 38th among all active NFL players in points, but every player above him on the list has been in the league at least four seasons.
Bass set a Buffalo Bills record
Bass set the Bills’ single-season scoring record with 141 points as a rookie in 2020, and his point total already has him eighth on the teams’ all-time scoring list. By the end of 2023, he could jump to third ahead of greats Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas who are tied at 522 points.
Bass’ big leg has been useful on kickoffs, too. He has a career touchback rate of 58.2%, but that would be higher if the Bills hadn’t made the decision this past year to have Bass kick the ball short of the goal line so that the coverage team could attempt to tackle the return men inside the 25.
