Cowboys advance in consolations

The trio of OSU wrestlers who lost in Saturday’s early session all stayed alive with consolation wins in the night rounds.

And each of them need one more win before the night ends to secure at least a top-six finish.

At 157, Teague Travis took a 9-5 decision over West Virginia’s Caleb Dowling. At 197, Luke Surber got an 8-2 decision over Iowa State’s Julien Broderson. And at heavyweight, Konner Doucet scored a 4-0 decision over North Dakota State’s Devon Dawson.

Sooners go 0-3 in semifinals

Despite sending three wrestlers to the semifinals OU won’t have a finalist at the Big 12 championships.

At 157, Jared Hall — the No. 8 seed who scored the first big upset of the tournament over Northern Colorado’s top-seeded Vinny Zerban — suffered a 6-0 loss to Iowa State’s fourth-seeded Cody Chittum.

At 197, second-seeded Stephen Buchanan was on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision to No. 3 seed Rocky Elam of Missouri.

And OU’s Josh Heindselman came up against one of the nation’s best heavyweights, Air Force’s Wyatt Hendrickson, who dealt Heindselman a 14-1 major decision.

OSU's Dustin Plott cruises to title match

Ever since Jan. 26, Oklahoma State 184-pounder Dustin Plott has been thinking about his next shot at Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen, who beat Plott in Gallagher-Iba Arena that day.

Second-seeded Plott gets his rematch on Sunday, scoring his third straight bonus-point victory of the day, 21-4 over Air Force’s Sam Wolf in the semifinals.

The undefeated and top-seeded Keckeisen advanced with an 11-3 major decision over Missouri’s Colton Hawks.

Plott gives OSU four finalists, along with Spratley, Fix and Williams.

In the 165 semifinals, OSU’s Izzak Olejnik lost 4-3 to two-time defending champion Keegan O’Toole. At 174, OSU freshman Brayden Thompson suffered a 3-2 loss to Gaven Sax of North Dakota State.

OSU’s Jordan Williams survives to reach final

Oklahoma State’s Jordan Williams waved his arms to the crowd, which shared significant amounts of both cheers and boos after the 149-pounder advanced to the finals with an 8-7 win. Williams upset top-seeded Casey Swiderski of Iowa State.

With the Cyclones in contention for the team title, they brought a heavy contingent of fans, who disapproved of Williams’ victory.

Williams built a 7-2 lead, but the match had to be stopped briefly while he was tended to for an injury in the third period. Swiderski got a takedown, then released Williams, who led 8-5 at that point.

From there, Williams — appearing to be limited by the previous injury — was twice called for stalling, each resulting in a penalty point for Swiderski. And Williams did his best to avoid Swiderski’s shots in the final nine seconds, though the Iowa State faithful screamed for yet another stalling call.

It wasn’t granted and Williams, a redshirt freshman from Tulsa, celebrated the victory.

The win was critical for OSU as well, since it entered the night session trailing Iowa State in the team standings.

Williams was the third OSU wrestler to advance to the finals in the first four weight classes of the night. At 141, OSU's second-seeded Tagen Jamison was defeated 4-1. thanks to a late takedown by third-seeded Cael Happel of Northern Iowa.

OSU sends Troy Spratley, Daton Fix to finals

The evening session got off to a good start for Oklahoma State, with 125-pounder Troy Spratley and 133-pounder Daton Fix winning their semifinal matches.

Spratley won 2-1 in sudden-victory overtime, scoring his point via a stalling penalty on Iowa State’s Kysen Terukina. The match went to overtime tied at 1, and second-seeded Spratley was nearing a takedown.

Terukina pulled free, but fled the mat. Already having been warned for stalling, the sixth-seeded Terukina was penalized one point, giving Spratley the victory.

Fifth-seeded Jore Volk of Wyoming upset No. 1 Noah Surtin of Missouri and will face Spratley in Sunday’s final.

At 133, Fix advanced to the championship match for the fifth time in his career. He earned a 4-0 decision over Derrick Cardinal of South Dakota State and will face second-seeded Evan Frost of Iowa State. Frost advanced with three consecutive major decisions on Saturday.

Josh Heindselman wins battle of Bedlam heavyweights

In what has been the most tense weight class over the last few years of Bedlam wrestling, the Big 12 meeting of heavyweights needed extra time.

OU’s Josh Heindselman scored an overtime takedown for a 4-1 sudden-victory win over OSU’s Konner Doucet. It was Heindselman’s second win in three matches against Doucet this season.

That puts Heindselman in the semifinals, where he’ll take on undefeated Air Force star Wyatt Hendrickson on Saturday night.

OU added another semifinalist at 197 pounds, with Stephen Buchanan pinning his opponent, Spencer Mooberry of South Dakota State in 6:20 to advance.

Second-seeded Buchanan will face third-seeded Rocky Elam of Missouri in the semis.

OSU’s Izzak Olejnik escapes with victory

The little things count big this time of year, and Izzak Olejnik proved it to earn his spot in the 165-pound semifinals.

The OSU super-senior gave up a reversal to Giano Petrucelli of Air Force late in the match, but Olejnik managed to escape with 22 seconds left for a 4-3 win.

Olejnik advances to face top-seeded and defending NCAA champion Keegan O’Toole in Saturday night’s semifinal round.

The Cowboys’ Dustin Plott secured his spot in the semis with another bonus-point win. He got two takedowns in the first 17 seconds of the third period for a 19-3 technical fall over West Virginia’s Dennis Robin.

OSU’s Teague Travis suffered a major-decision loss in his 157-pound quarterfinal, falling 13-5 to Cael Swenson of South Dakota State.

OU’s Jared Hill scores major upset

In perhaps the most substantial upset of the early session, OU’s eighth-seeded Jared Hill upset No. 1 Vinny Zerban of Northern Colorado, 4-3, in the 157-pound quarterfinals.

Hill got a takedown late in the second period, and Zerban kept it close thanks to two one-point stalling penalties on Hill in the final minute of the match. Hill will face Iowa State's fourth-seeded Cody Chittum in the semifinals on Saturday night.

In the 149-pound quarterfinals, OU’s Willie McDougald was pinned in an upset loss to seventh-seeded Gabe Willochell of Wyoming, who put McDougald on his back in just 2:11.

The Sooners also lost another potential semifinalist when 174-pounder Tate Picklo was defeated in sudden-victory overtime by OSU’s Brayden Thompson.

More bonus points for Daton Fix, Tagen Jamison

OSU’s Daton Fix needed just a couple of minutes to wrap up his quarterfinal match.

The top-seeded 133-pounder pinned eighth-seeded Garrett Ricks of Wyoming in 2:03, Fix’s second bonus-point win of the day.

Then 141-pounder Tagen Jamison added bonus points as well, finishing off a 10-0 major decision over Utah Valley’s Haiden Drury. It was Jamison’s second bonus-point win of the day as well.

At 125, OSU’s second-seeded Troy Spratley earned his semifinal spot with an 8-4 decision over West Virginia’s seventh-seeded Jett Strickenberger.

OSU’s Jordan Williams advanced to the semifinals at 149 thanks to a late takedown that gave him a 13-8 decision over fifth-seeded Alek Martin of South Dakota State. The fourth-seeded Williams led 9-8 in the closing seconds, already with a riding time point secured, but scored a takedown to seal the victory.

OSU’s Dustin Plott opens with pin

OSU senior Dustin Plott, seeded second at 184 pounds, opened his Big 12 weekend with a pin of OU’s Giuseppe Hoose in the first round. Plott scored early, then put Hoose on his back for a pin at the 2:35 mark of the first period.

It was the third bonus-point victory in six opportunities in the opening round.

At 157, the Cowboys got a win from third-seeded Teague Travis via 8-5 decision over Cal Baptist’s Chaz Hallmark.

OSU wrestlers Izzak Olejnik at 165 and Brayden Thompson at 174 received first-round byes.

The Pokes suffered just one loss in the first round, with 197-pounder Luke Surber getting pinned in the opening period. Seeded seventh, Surber lost to unseeded Spencer Mooberry of North Dakota State.

Bedlam heavyweight bout awaits

With OSU’s Konner Doucet earning a 2-0 decision over Cal Baptist’s Chris Island in the opening round, Doucet now awaits a Bedlam showdown in the quarterfinals.

OU heavyweight Josh Heindselman, who is seeded fourth, got a first-round bye, giving he and the fifth-seeded Doucet the chance to break their season tie. Doucet won their match in Norman and Heindselman took the Stillwater meeting.

OU’s Tate Picklo advances to quarterfinals

OU’s Tate Picklo advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 decision over Noah Blake of Air Force. Picklo is the No. 6 seed at 174 pounds. He is set to face third-seeded Brayden Thompson of OSU, who defeated Picklo by major decision in their first meeting.

But Picklo came back with a sudden-victory decision in the dual at OSU.

Picklo’s first-round win turned out to be the last for OU in the first round.

The Sooners got byes at 157 (Jared Hill), 165 (Cael Carlson), 197 (Stephen Buchanan) and heavyweight (Josh Heindselman).

Oklahoma State scores early bonus points

Oklahoma State opened the day with a pair of technical-fall victories at the Big 12 wrestling championships.

It began with top-seeded Daton Fix at 133 pounds, posting an 18-3 tech fall over Fernando Barreto of North Dakota State.

At 141, OSU’s second-seeded Tagen Jamison controlled a Bedlam opener with an 18-3 tech fall of OU’s Kaden Smith.

OSU 125-pounder Troy Spratley and 149-pounder Jordan Williams each received a first-round bye.

Willie McDougald gets OU first win

A winless start for the Sooners finally ended with 149-pounder Willie McDougald, the No. 2 seed who used a four-point nearfall in the second period on his way to an 11-0 major decision over James Emmer of Utah Valley.

OU started the day 0-3 with losses at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.
