Bengals studs and duds from preseason Week 3 loss to Colts

The Cincinnati Bengals didn't play starters in the preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night.

Instead, the Bengals opted to put as much film as possible toward the upcoming cut days while formulating the 53-man roster.

For those interested in preseason results, technically speaking, the Bengals lost on the scoreboard, 27-14. But this was a quiet preseason finale overall because the team got so many game-like reps in joint practices with two different teams during training camp.

Here is a look at the biggest winners and losers from the exhibition as the team now turns its attention to final cuts before the regular season.

Stud: WR Charlie Jones

That 48-yard return on special teams says it all about Jones. Yes, he might not be in the driver's seat for slot snaps compared to Andrei Iosivas and Mike Gesicki. But he might be even more important to the team overall due to the way he can swing field position on a dime.

Dud: Backup offenisve line

Cody Ford and the backups struggled in the first quarter, to say the least. It was understandable, though, as they had to run up against starters. It feels like the coaches already figured out much last week when Jaxson Kirkland got run at left tackle and rookie Matt Kee kept ascending on the interior.

Stud: S Jordan Battle

Battle might end up as the third safety behind Geno Stone and Vonn Bell in terms of snaps. But his pick-six of Anthony Richardson was still one of this game's major highlights -- and potentially a sign of things to come after what he showed last year as a rookie.

Stud: DL Carlos Davis

Davis only joined the roster on August 8 as a rash of injuries hit the defensive line. But at one point on Thursday, he blew past a Colts starter to stuff a run for a loss -- and it's the type of impact plays in these games that weigh heavily on the roster construction process.

Stud: DE Cedric Johnson

The sixth-round rookie was a mild riser in camp even before all the injuries. He added another sack on Thursday night, bringing his total to two. With so many players out in front of him, it sure feels like he's ascending to the final roster.
